Reviving old roads, Kaidou |
This was a temporary road side exhibition of “
Kaidou”
which is a highway or a walking route constructed in the
Edo period. The
exhibition was held at an underground street of Nihonbashi area which is a starting
point of Five Great Kaidous. Literally, “Kai” is a town and “dou” is a road, so
“Kaidou” includes post towns which treat tourists.
73 posters showed present conditions of Kaidous,
so this page is a photo collection of Kaidous.

五街道の出発点となった日本橋の地下街で、旧街道の写真が展示されていた。73枚のポスターには、街道、宿場の現在の様子が映し出されている。ポスターの配置はランダムであったが、まず、五街道を東京に近いところから、次に北から街道や往還を紹介する。仕事や遊山で多くの人が行き交ったと思うと楽しい。

Toukaidou which links Eod (old name of Tokyo) and Kyoto is the most busy Kaidou even now. There were 53 post towns in Toukaidou, and there were three post towns in Yokohama in the Edo period
