“ We are born in order to enjoy
We are born in order to entertain
When I hear the voice of children playing
I myself cannot stop swinging”
This is an old Japanese song written in the book called Ryojin Hisho which was published around 1180.
Today there are a lot of entertainments. We can enjoy driving, watching movies, playing video games, going to amusement parks. We Japanese didn't have such kind of entertainments and fun just 100 years ago.
However, in the big cities like Tokyo and Osaka, there were various forms of entertainments. For example, in Edo (the old name of Tokyo), there was a "Kacho" tea house which is called a bird cafe today. "Ka" means a flower, "cho" means a bird. Night markets were opened almost every day in front of temples and shrines. There were many theaters, many book stores, many restaurants, and so on.
On the other hand, most Japanese who lived in country side were farmers. Farmers accounted for 80% of Japanese people, and craftsmen and merchants accounted for 10% around 150 years ago. They were ordinary people, and they worked almost every day. Their lives were simple and plain. They cherished things, and they respected gods.

I am sure they also had fun, pleasure, delights, entertainments etc. I would like to focus on these ordinary Japanese, and extract their fun in their daily life from old diaries, exhibits of museums and books. They would give us a lot of good advice to people who live in a materialist society.
