Yoshino’s daily life 41 (Oct. to Dec. in 1856、安政3年10~12月)

  October 、 10 月 Sickness of Teiju (female monk) and treatment 、貞珠の病状と治療  Teiju who stationed in the village got sick last month. Her condition was not good, so villagers supported her.  On the 8 th , a pharmacist came from Yobaduka which is around 10km away from the village. He prepared medicine. Yoshino treated him with a meal and a drink.  Afterward, the villagers went to Yobaduka to buy medicine every two days. However, Teiju’s condition didn’t get better. On the 13 th , the pharmacist came again.  Finally, villagers sent a letter to her younger brother who lived in Edo (old name of Tokyo) which was around 20km away. Her brother came on the next day (23 rd of October). His wife came on the 24 th , and their daughter came on the 28 th . Eventually, Teiju went to Edo together with her extended family . July 、7月  On the 12 th , Ryusuke came back from Kashiwa which is around 10km away from Yoshino’s house. On the 13 th , Bon rite started which welcome ancestors’ spirits. Ryusuke was a child probably.  He came on the 8 th of September again. Someone went to Kashiwa with him on the 11 th , but he returned in the evening. So, master’s mother accompanied him and went to Kashiwa. She returned next day. It was important to take care of him properly. April 、 4 月  The horse capturing of the shougn’s war-horse ranch was held. It was an annual event of the region. Yoshino dispatched one supervisor and five workers from the 11 th to the 13 th .  The particular affair of that year was the visiting of VIP who was a former lord .  この年も、幕府の 軍馬牧場・小金牧での野馬捕り が行われました。吉野家は、 11 日から 13 日まで、宰領一人と人足五人を出しています。  例年と違うのは、御屋敷の御隠居様見物に来たこと です。 VIP です。   Visiting of VIP 、御隠居様のお出で  On the 11 th , they prepared to welcome the VIP ; borrowing palanquin and formal clothes. They also obtained soba (buckwheat) flour.  At 2 PM, Hanzaemon went to Nagareyama pier with two men who carried the palanquin , and met the VIP, an elder maid and a servant. At 6 PM, the VIP and the attendants arrived at Yoshino’s house. Yoshino’s daily life 38 (Jan. to Mar. 1856、安政3年1~3月)

 T. Harris stationed at Japan as the first Consul General of the USA. He started negotiating the commerce treaty. The shogunate  was forced to conclude the unequal treaty. Many people including the dynasty complained against it, and it triggered the end of the longstanding shogunate in 1867 which was established in 1603.  By the way, Mr. Yoshino pilgrimaged to Ise Shrine which was one of the most pleasant events at that time.  米総領事としてハリスが下田に着任し、不平等条約である通商条約の交渉が進められる年です。また、吉田松陰が松下村塾の再興を許され、倒幕の機運が醸成されていきます。  この年、主人は伊勢参りに行きます。   January 、 1 月  On the 5 th , he left for Ise with four pals around 9AM. Ise was the most popular tourist destination. “I'm eager to visit Ise, even just for once in my life.” is a lyric from “Ise dance song”. Going to Ise Shrine was a people’s dream .  Villagers sent them money and saw off . On the same day, they cerebrated the departure and took half day off in the afternoon.  Farmers traveled in winter which is an agricultural off-season.
