T. Harris stationed at Japan as the first Consul General of
the USA. He started negotiating the commerce treaty. The shogunate was forced to conclude the unequal treaty. Many people including the
dynasty complained against it, and it triggered the end of the longstanding shogunate in 1867 which was established in 1603.
By the way, Mr. Yoshino pilgrimaged to Ise Shrine which was
one of the most pleasant events at that time.
January、1月
On the 5th, he left for Ise with four pals
around 9AM. Ise was the most popular tourist destination. “I'm eager to visit
Ise, even just for once in my life.” is a lyric from “Ise dance song”. Going
to Ise Shrine was a people’s dream.
Villagers sent them money and saw off. On the same day, they cerebrated the
departure and took half day off in the afternoon.
Farmers traveled in winter which is an agricultural
off-season. They were afraid of dying while traveling, so they usually traveled
with friends.
It is a pity that he didn’t write about the trip on this
diary. And someone continued writing it while he was out of the house.

On the 17th, they took a half day off in the
afternoon for rabbit hunting. It was a peaceful time.
On the 21st, a family member invited Jirou-uemon
and Shigezou for a meal and a drink, because it was an estimated arrival day to
Ise. Ise is 500km away from their village, so they walked 30km a day in
average. They walked a lot.
On the 22nd and 23rd, the villagers
took leaves. They went to Ise Shrine as the delegation of Ise Kou
(religious group). I guess they had a party in front of the hanging scroll of
the Ise God. On the other hand, the delegates were probably satisfied with the
days in Ise.

The pilgrims stayed at their Onshi’s house who
invited them to Ise.
The house was large and solemn. It had a shrine and a stage
for Kagura (Shinto music and dancing) inside. The accommodation fee was fifteen
to twenty times as expensive as a normal inn. The fee included a prayer fee and
luxurious dishes such as sashimi (raw fish) and grilled fish. Surprisingly
enough, they were guided to the houses of prostitution.
Oshi's treatment to the group of forty-one people who
visited in 1803 was described. The pilgrims arrived on the 19th of
January. The Oshi greeted them at a hall and served mochi cakes which were
tokens of their arrival, sake (alcohol) and so on. Then, three guides showed
them around Ise-Geku Shrine and so on. The next day, two guides did so around Ise-Naiku Shrine. In front of the shrine, the visitors bought Mankintan
as a souvenir which was a medicine and a specialty of Ise. After lunch (soba
noodle and sake), they were guided to Futamigaura at the coast and visited the
sacred rock cave. On the third day, they departed. The luxurious breakfast
including sake which celebrated their departure were served.
Yoshino and his pals probably enjoyed a lot.

February & March、2
The pilgrims didn’t come back to the village all together.
In the evening of the 15th of February, two
villagers returned. They said that they arrived at Ise on the 21st
of January as scheduled and departed on the 26th. They went straight
home.
Three other pilgrims including Yoshino went to other regions
(Nara and Shikoku). Returnees said they would not come back until the end of
February.
On the 16th, the villagers took leave. They
celebrated the safe travel of the returnees.
On the 28th of February, two villagers
returned without Yoshino. I’m not sure when he returned, but he delivered
talismans of Ise Shrine on the 14th of March. I guess Yoshino
visited Kyoto, Osaka and Shikoku (Konpira Shrine) which were popular destinations of
wealthy farmers.
He visited Kashiwa on the 22nd of March and
visited Komagi-shinden on the 24th. He delivered Ofuda paper talismans
which were souvenirs of Ise.

Aisuke who was Yoshino’s son attended a wedding ceremony
during his father’s absence. He was around ten-year-old, but he carried out his
role as the substitute.
Btw, a story teller visited in February. Zenzou in the other
village came with a monk. The monk performed storytelling from 3PM to 12AM.
Several villagers joined the event. I’m sure it was a fun time for them. $40
(current value) was paid to the monk.
