Tenryu River learning center “Kawaranbe”、天竜川総合学習館・かわらんべ

“Kawaranbe” (Kappa) is youkai monster which was said to live underwater. The center is by Tenryu River which is the tenth longest one in Japan (213km). It shows us creatures at the river, flood and its prevention. The locals suffered from flood, but have lived in the area.

「かわらんべ」は、伊那谷の方言で「カッパ」の意味です。学習館は、諏訪湖（長野県）を源とし、遠州灘（静岡県）まで流れる天竜川の上流域、飯田市にあります。天竜川の水害と防災、生き物を学べます。今は防災がしっかりしていますが、水害で苦しみながらも暮らしてきた先輩たちがいたのですねえ。

河川展示室では、天竜川の歴史と文化を教えてくれます。天竜川は数々の巨石を押し流してきました。

It was said that a dragon or a large snake caused flood. Therefore, people have enshrined a water deity. A flood often caused plague, so people established a shrine for repelling plagues and have held a ritual (festival). They relied on deities.

龍や大蛇が洪水を起こすと考えられていた時代、人びとは水神を祀り、洪水を防ごうとしました。また、洪水で疫病が流行ると津島様を勧請しました。まさに神頼みですね。

Festivals offered to deities are fun events for locals. The upper photo shows a river port; the long river was important for water transportation before dams were constructed. The port is used for boat tours now.

神に捧げた祭りは人びとの楽しみでもあります。ところで、天竜川の水運（写真上）は、ダムができるまで物資輸送で重要な役割を果たしていました。拠点だった時又港は、現在も観光としての川下りで使われています。

The model above are traditional flood prevention methods. Locals not only prayed but also stacked stones and so on in order to control flood.

人びとは祈っていただけではありません。石を積むなどできる手段で治水に努めてきました。模型と写真で説明されています。

There are legends related to the river. “Kawaranbe” who helped people was one of them. Legends gave good lessons to people especially children to fear a river and to keep river clean.

川にかかわる伝説も生まれました。人の手伝いをしてくれたカワランベ（左）もその一つです。伝説は、川を怖れる心、大切にする心を育んでくれますね。

There has been a local custom to eat insects including underwater ones. It is written that it is the sole food culture in the world to eat aquatic insects in river. They mainly eat larva. It is the blessings of river.

In behind, the terrible flood in 1961 which killed 136 people is exhibited. Hope it was the last massive disaster.

「ざざ虫」はトビケラなどの川虫で、「世界で唯一の河川の水生昆虫食文化」があると書かれていました。幼虫を食べます。これも川の恵みですね。

その奥では、136名の死者・行方不明者をだした三六災害（昭和36年6月）について詳しく説明されています。最後の大規模水害になって欲しいものです。

Living creatures in the river are exhibited in the 1^st floor. There is also a lecture room; it’s a learning center.

１階には、天竜川の生き物が展示されています。自然や防災のセミナー室もあります。学習館です。

The valley “Tenryu-kyo” above is just five hundred meters downstream from the learning center. It is a popular tourist spot, and you can enjoy boat tour.

かわらんべの500ｍほど下流にある天竜峡は川下りで人気です。

Very good : ★★★ (this is a long and interesting page) Various entertainments at Edo or old Tokyo in the Edo period are written in this book. I found a lot of fun here. I focus on the fun of common people, so I put aside the fun of Daimyo loads , samurais and rich merchants in this book. In terms of people’s fun, Edo was the paradise definitely. There were a lot of funs in day time and night time. Edo attracted people especially from the country side. The Great Yoshiwara (published in 2018)　吉原はスゴイ

吉原はスゴイ‐江戸文化を育んだ魅惑の遊郭（堀口茉純、 2018 ）人の楽しみの発見度： Excellent ★★★ This book is written about an authorized red-light district Yoshiwara which was in Edo (old name of Tokyo). There are many pictures in this book and you can understand all about Yoshiwara by this small book. The author is a pretty actress who is devoted to Japanese history especially Edo city (https://hoollii.com/). She tries to depict the contribution of Yoshiwara to foster Edo culture. 江戸・明治の性愛の楽しみ

性愛については、赤裸々に書き残す人は少なく、隠語で書かれていることが多いといいます。そりゃそうですよね。でも、いくつかの本には、江戸・明治の人々が性愛をどのように楽しんでいたかが書かれています。私が読んだのはほんの数冊ですが、その中から紹介します。ここでは、ビジネスとしての性愛や同性愛ではなく、日常の男女間の性愛を対象にします。人間に欠かせない楽しみですもんね。ところで、今回は、英文を作れませんでした。私の英語力ではとても対応できない内容なので、英文作成に協力していただけるようでしたら、ぜひ、お声かけ下さい。（ This article “Fun of the eros （性愛） ” is written only in Japanese , because it is too difficult for me to write in English due to lack of vocabulary about eros. Travel of Isabella L. Bird in 1878, part 1　イザベラバードが見た明治初期の日本（1）

Arrival and visiting Asakusa 日本着、そして浅草訪問 Isabella arrived at Yokohama, near Tokyo, in May of 1878. She travelled northern Japan including Hokkaido and western Japan including Ise mainly by rickshaw , then she left Japan in December. This diary was written as letters to her younger sister. She described in detail, so we can understand what happened clearly. She was 46 when she came to Japan, and she hired Japanese lad as an interpreter. I admire her coura ge because she was the first lady foreigner to visit inland. This book is stored up in many libraries and Manga version was issued. She observed various things such as behaviors of Japanese people, plants and stratums meticulously and she elaborated on scenic beauty. (This museum is closed until 2025 for renovations. I focus on the Edo period here. Various enjoyments are exhibited such as festivals, theaters, reading and red light district Yoshihara, meanwhile difficulties in life are also exhibited. 江戸、東京の全てが分かる巨大博物館である。ここでは、江戸時代を中心に記載した。人の楽しみの面からみると、読書、縁日、芝居、吉原などの人の楽しみ、また、苦しみも詰まっている。 Inside the entrance gate, there is a full-scale model of Nihonbashi Bridge.
