Shinagawa has flourished as a post town on
Toukaidou highway which connected Edo (old name of Tokyo) and Kyoto. It was the
first post town from Edo and only 8km away from the center of Edo. This museum exhibits Shinagawa post town and a villa of Tokugawa Shougun. This museum was
built at the site of an old residence; an old tea-house remains here. I was
impressed by the ordinary people who enjoyed sakura cherry blossom viewing on the hill, and by a peddler of Ukiyoe printings.
Shinagawa post town
Shinagawa Villa、
After the villa was lost, the hill was called Gotenyama
(Villa hill) and the eighth shogun planted Sakura trees so it became a famous
tourist spot of cherry blossom viewing. The party under blossoms seems to be so happy and
joyful.

The photo
below shows the detail official map of Shinagawa (1806, copy). Shinagawa is a
seaside town.
The table above shows the number of
shops. Shinagawa was a big post town which had 1,561 houses and 6,890 people in
1843. There were 96 inns which served food and there were also fancy ladies in some inns. There were 64 tea
houses and 9 sushi restaurants too.
There was a business to sell
printings which was called “Beni-e-uri” that means “Beni” for red, “e” for a painting and “uri” for a peddler. In comparison to other printigs, “Beni-e” was simple, which base color was black and was painted few colors such as red. Printings of beautiful ladies, actors and
samurais were sold. The funny fact is the peddler shouldered the building
model of Yoshiwara which was the most popular and highest class red light
district. The model house obviously stand out like a clear signboard.
I reckon that printings of beautiful
and iconic fancy ladies in Yoshiwara (TheGreat Yoshiwara) were so popular among ordinary people.

Travelers left on the 12th of
December, probably they were farmers because winter was an off-season for them in Japan. They arrived at Ise on the 4th of January which was
around 500km away from Edo. They continued traveling and reached Iwakuni which
is famous for its drum shape bridge called “Kintaikyou” finally, then they returned to
Osaka, Kyoto and visited Zenkouji temple and Ikaho which is famous for its hot
spring. It was long term travel but they walked almost every day! Traveling has been fun for people for a long time

The
specialty of Shinagawa are dyed on the kimono, those were fishes and shells. It
would be a desire for a trip or an excursion.
Shinagawa Villa、
The
model above is a villa of Tokugawa Shougun. There was a falconry site (hunting
using hawks) in Shinagawa, so shouguns visited Shinagawa and stayed at the
villa. Especially the third shogun Iemitsu liked there and visited about 200
times in 18 years. He built Tokaiji temple, and invited an honorable monk
Takuan there. Unfortunately the villa was burned out in 1702 but it was never rebuilt.

was good excursion and picnic site.

Shinagawa was also a fishing town which
provided fishes and shells to Edo. The model of a ship called “Keta” is exhibited which has a
