The shogunate (Bakuhu) abandoned the national isolation
policy and concluded a treat with U.S., U.K., Russia and the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, the great earthquake killed ten thousand people in Edo (old name of
Tokyo). But those events didn’t affect Yoshino’s family seriously.

On the New Year's Day, they went to the village shrine and
temple, then greeted one another as usual.
On the 5th, the master went to Edo with Kizaemon;
it was rare that he went at the beginning of the year. He returned next
evening.
On the 7th, Asakichi asked him to take a leave
to go to Edo, and it was approved. The master probably talked him about Edo
which had abundant entertainment attractions even in the Edo period (1603~1868). It
was a five-day trip which was very exciting for a country boy who was a helper
of Yoshino family.

On the 15th, his married daughter Oura came
for New Year greeting. She went back on the 24th, and mother
walked her to her house which was in the near village. Mother stayed there for
one night; she often sent her daughter off.
On the 20th, J. Inamura came for New Year
greeting and said “I would like Onao to go to her home village (Maki) next
month.” Onao got married with the master last November. It was common that
married daughters visited their parents' home after the New Year holiday and Bon rite for ancestors.
Onao left home in the early morning on the 9th of
February. Onao got on a horse, Shigezou and others accompanied with her to go
to the pier. She visited J. Inamura at first, then went to Kizou’s house in
Maki village. She returned on the 26th. Sakujirou who lived in Maki
accompanied her. She was treated very well.
On the 29th, he returned books to Nonoshita
and borrowed new books. Those were war chronicles. He borrowed the ancient
Chinese chronicles and the Japanese one (Genpei Seisuiki) around two and half
years ago. How long it was! Books were precious because there were no printing
machines.

February、2月
On the 5th, there was a fight between
someone and the head monk of Choufukuji temple. The record of a fight was very
rare. The master was asked to go the temple. They had broken trays, dishes,
lanterns, sliding doors and so on. Someone was wounded on the head, so he was
brought to Ka village to be treated. It was 4 am. The master sent him to
Kichibei’s house, then he came back home around 6 am.
On the 6th, they were reconciled in front
of relevant people at Kichibei’s house. He came back in the morning. Good job
(Otsukare sama)!

On the 10th, a moxibustion therapist who
probably lived in Edo came and stayed at Yoshino’s house. On the next day,
people came from various villages; it was an on-site service. His mother took
him to the neighboring village on the 12th. She went to Yoshikawa,
which is the other side of Edo River, for a moxibustion sometimes, so she probably introduced the therapist there.

In the evening of the 12th, villagers in
Kubohiraga visited and talked about the Shoujirou’s wife who flew out from home. He
consulted various issues; he was a good boss.
On the 27th, some regulations about gambles and
pubs (Izakaya; “I” is “staying”, “zaka” is “sake” and “ya” is “house”) were issued. I’m
eager to go to that Izakaya!
Around 10pm of the 28th, there was a fire at
Sangorou’s house in the near village “Ushiro-hirai”. It burned down the main building
and so on. The master went soon, and came back at dawn. On the 29th,
he went to Ushiro-hirai again with the villagers to remove ashes. He came back around
4pm. On the 30th, somebody of Ushiro-hirai came with sake, so
villagers gathered and drank the next day. What did they chat about?
