About Yoshino family and Nagareyama >
This
diary was written in the late Edo period by Tsuneuemon Yoshino.
Yoshino is a very old family. Yoshino family was a family of samurai long time ago. Then they became farmers.
He lived with his family including retired parents and several helpers. He owned a lot of lands and he belonged to local government as a village head called Nanushi.

Yoshino
family had lived in Shibasaki at Nagareyama city. Nagareyama is 25km away from the
Edo castle, so they could go to Edo for a half day trip by foot. Asakusa, which
is a major entertainment district in Edo, is 20km away. During that time there
were about one million people living in Edo, so it was already one of the biggest
city in the world with a lot of entertainment.
There
are many rich forests in Nagareyama. There are also Shinto shrines and Buddhist
temples. Even today, there are agricultural farms for rice and vegetables.
In NagareyamaCity Museum, we can see old goods, farming equipment, annual events and so on. There are some exhibits from Yoshino, although I'm not sure it was from T.Yoshino family or not.

< About the age >
It was a feudal age; Tokugawa shogun (shogun was a military head) ruled Japan. In 1849, O-shikagari or deer hunting was hold by the shogun for the military exercise and pest control (vermin extermination). 70,000 farmers were convened in order to chase wild animals to the venue where the shogun existed. Yoshino dispatched several farmers. Tokugawa shogun had strong power then, and was able to dispatch 50,000 soldiers from Edo.
Foreign
warships visited Japan often during this time in order to trade with Japan. In
1853, very strong American fleet directed by Matthew Calbraith Perry arrived and
they required Japan to give up national isolation policy which Tokugawa kept
more than 200 years. Tokugawa became weaker and weaker, and finally in 1867, The
Tokugawa shogunate was defeated by the Emperor. I can say it was a turbulent
age, but people in this area lived peacefully and enjoyed everyday life.
I focus
on the time from 1849 when O-shishigari (deer hunting) was held, to 1854 when the
Perry fleet came to Japan again and forced Tokugawa to change the policy.
