A year spent without major issue (September to December, 1807)、
| Rice fields just before harvest、
September
It was a season of rice harvest and the local festivals
as usual.
9th, the festival in Hyōemon’s village, who kept this
diary, was hold. Seven relatives arrived the day before and stayed, and
two more came on the day itself.
His son Fusajirō and others also set off to attend festivals in
Ōmuro and Kashiwa, staying overnight for the occasion.
However, Hyōemon was so busy. He was occupied day after
day with meetings regarding the sukegō duties (compulsory
transportation work) demanded by the Sōka post-town,
as well as dealing with a dispute of relatives in Shibasaki. Reading
about it, I cannot help but feel sympathy for him; he was going out to consult
others or receiving visitors who came to seek his counsel.
October
19th, the rice threshing was completed. Soon
after the agricultural season had ended, the work at the Kogane-maki (a shogunate
horse pasture) began.
24th and 25th, villagers were sent out as
laborers for embankment repair work of the pasture.
The catching of grazing horses began on the 19th
of the following month. 23rd, Hyōemon’s wife and children went to
watch; it was the most popular event in the region.
November
26th, he was invited to the celebratory feast
marking the arrival of a new Buddha statue at Hongaku-ji Temple. The
following day, he went to assist with the ceremony. The village took the day
off due to the event.
December
It was the usual year-end season, but on the 7th, a meeting
took place for the six villages under the same lord; Hyōemon stayed
overnight at the home of Chūbei in Kanasugi Village. It is said the village
headmen were friendly; while their interests may have sometimes conflicted, I
hope they enjoyed a pleasant time.
With the soot-sweeping, rice-cake pounding, and the settling of
various accounts all concluded, the year drew to a close.
Despite the many affairs occurred, the Yoshino family seems
to have spent the year in peace, lacking nothing in terms of food,
clothing, or shelter. That is the best thing of all.
