Hachijō fabric kimono in yellow

October

The new head priest arrived. An entry on the 1st records, "Discussion about the welcome ceremony for the new priest of Chōfuku-ji Temple," though the contents of the event are unknown.

1st, rice harvest was completed.

4th, drying of the rice was finished; busiest agricultural time was over.

4th, Izaemon returned from Edo (old name of Tokyo) bringing four rolls of Hachijō fabric for kimono, which had been arranged by Hyōemon (author of this diary) and others.

A breakdown of the rolls is recorded:

Shiba-Ji's Tango was priced at 1.1 ryō (around 110,000yen); Chōfuku-ji's Tobi patterned fabric was 0.4 ryō and yellow one was 0.7 ryō; and Hyōemon's Tobi patterned one was 0.3 ryō .

17th, Hyōemon took the fabric to Teirin in Matsugasaki Village—it's a wonderful gift!

6th, Hyōemon visited the head priest of Chōfuku-ji Temple, then went to Seiryū-in Temple in Nadukari together. They were treated to the season's first soba (buckwheat) noodles. The gathering included local notables such as Mr. Watanuki, who managed the Shogun's horse pasture.

14th, he hosted a soba feast, inviting people from Seiryū-in, Chōfuku-ji, Shiba-Jo and so on. Gensuke prepared the noodles; he kneaded seven shō (7kg) of flour into noodles—enough for 30 to 35 servings. It surely was a lively occasion.

20th, he held Ebisu-kou gathering.

21st, he was invited to a neighbor's Ebisu-kou. While merchant households celebrated lively to pray Ebisu (deity) for prosperous business, I wonder how farming households observed the occasion.

22nd, he delivered the first installment of the annual rice tax—45 hyō (2.7 tons)—and successfully completed the full payment on the 19th of the following month.

Furomagi Village, where Hyōemon served as village headman, had escaped the effects of drought; the village would have a reliable water supply.

November

2nd, relatives and all the villagers attended a memorial service of the 13th anniversary of Hyōemon’s ancestor's passing.

Hyōemon provided the offering for the priest, and distributed gifts such as rice to the attendees. He served meals consisted of "one soup and five dishes," prepared by Denshichi and Gensuke; Gensuke was an all-rounder.

7th to 10th, Hyōemon undertook a pilgrimage to eighty-eight sacred sites across northern Chiba and southern Ibaraki to pray for his mother's recovery from illness. The final place was Ne-no-Gongen in Abiko, which his mother and he visited frequently.

During this month, ceremonies celebrating children's growth (Obi-toki) were held in various families, and soba noodles were served in some.

28th, Hyōemon traveled to Edo accompanied by Nishi-Mata and others. The primary purpose concerned Nishi-Mata, except for tax affairs.

They visited the Onatsu's family home in Kosugi Village in Kanagawa pref.; Onatsu was a woman lived with Nishi-Mata in Edo.

Sorry to say, they were told that the matter could only be resolved by Ebisu-ya, which was the merchant where she was in service. Thereafter, they told with Tousuke of Ebisu-ya. Then, they reported various affairs including the issue to the lord's officials.

Hyōemon returned to the village on the 4th of the following month.

I’m not sure why they worked for Nishi-Mata so much.

( This article “Fun of   the eros (性愛) ” is written only in Japanese , because it is too difficult for me to write in English due to lack of vocabulary about eros. If you kindly help me, please let me know.

Itaibara furusato (hometown) museum、

Itaibara is a mountainous  hamlet.   I went over the bridge and visited its tiny museum . There are twenty-three houses in it. The signboard says, “Cars cannot go inside the settlement, so  it keeps a traditional structure of a mountainous hamlet ." It is rare even in Tottori Prefecture.” I went upstream. The museum is next to the café (Nodoka) which is a renovated house. The  museum was a store house  of the café at present. The inside is  crammed with panels , which are interviews to ex-villagers and so on. It's similar to be a research presentation. The crests at the very back implies the history.

The Great Yoshiwara (published in 2018) 吉原はスゴイ

Excellent ★★★  This book is written about an authorized red-light district Yoshiwara which was in Edo (old name of Tokyo). There are many pictures in this book and you can understand all about Yoshiwara by this small book.  The author is a pretty actress who is devoted to Japanese history especially Edo city (https://hoollii.com/). She tries to depict the contribution of Yoshiwara to foster Edo culture. Life in Edo, old Tokyo (published in 1959) 江戸生活事典

Very good : ★★★  (this is a long and interesting page)   Various entertainments at Edo or old Tokyo in the  Edo period are written in this book. I found a lot of fun here. I focus on the fun of common people, so I put aside the fun of Daimyo loads , samurais and rich merchants in this book.   In terms of people’s fun, Edo was the paradise definitely. There were a lot of funs in day time and night time. Edo attracted people especially from the country side. I started from my favorite chapter. Edo or old Tokyo was very busy city, Seasonal recreations are written at first. Travel of Isabella L. Bird in 1878, part

Arrival and visiting Asakusa Isabella arrived at Yokohama, near Tokyo, in May of 1878.   She travelled northern Japan including Hokkaido and western Japan including Ise mainly by rickshaw , then she left Japan in December. This diary was written as letters to her younger sister.  She described in detail, so we can understand what happened clearly.  She was 46 when she came to Japan, and she hired Japanese lad as an interpreter. I admire her coura ge because she was the first lady foreigner to visit inland.  This book is stored up in many libraries and Manga version was issued.  She observed various things such as behaviors of Japanese people, plants and stratums meticulously and she elaborated on scenic beauty. I leave those matters to other authors, I would like to focus on the fun of old Japanese which she saw in Japan.   The photo of Isabella in 1896 from the exhibition “Voyage of Unbeaten Tracks in Japan” 、1 896 年の...
