Childbirth of the married daughter (March and April 1807)、
March
8th, children went to the memorial service for the
"Thousand Buddhist statues" at Hiregasaki.
11th, Hyōemon—the author of this diary—received
back the garments he had lent to the daughter of the Shiba-Nishi family.
Those were silk textiles (luxurious items), certainly not
hemp or cotton. A white rinzu (白綸子), a pale yellow chirimen (浅黄ちりめん), a Hon-Hachijō (本八丈) kimonos and obi
belts were included.
I wonder they were used for what purpose.

20th, Hyōemon traveled to Seigen-ji Temple in
Ushigome, Edo (old name of Tokyo), to attend the third memorial service
for the retired lord, Mr. Inagaki.
Seigen-ji still stands today; it was founded in 1627 by Inagaki
Zenuemon, a man renowned as a master of horsemanship.
April
1st, Oira who had married into a family in
Hiregasaki, gave birth to a boy.
Hyōemon’s wife rushed over, bringing baby clothes and sekihan
(red bean rice) for celebration.
8th, the wife and child went to Hiregasaki for the Oshichiya
(the seventh-night celebration).
Oira visited her parents' home (Hyōemon’s house) on the 16th
and stayed until the 18th; it was a happy time.
Buddhism has the thought of reincarnation. A number of rites of passage are performed for a new life from the other world. One of these is Oshichiya, held on the seventh day after birth; the newborn is given a name at the time.
Furthermore, in an era of poor medical technology, there was a saying that "before the age of seven, a child belongs to the gods"; until a child reached the age of seven (by traditional East Asian reckoning, or six by modern counting), their life was considered fragile and under divine protection.
16th, his mother and children attended the Kōmyō
Shingon (Mantra of Light) chanting gathering at Chōfuku-ji Temple.
The children visited temples more than today; I think
that children who learn to press their palms together to pray before the Buddha
will not grow up to do wrong.
Meanwhile, farming work was getting into full swing.
Although there had been a dry spell, rain finally fell.
29th, Hyōemon set out on a trip to "New
Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage".
Accompanying him were the head priest of Chofuku-ji Temple,
Yaemon from Hirai Village, and a villager named Kiemon. This was a pilgrimage
along the Soma 88-Temple route at present (Reference in Japanese: https://tesshow.jp/soma88_index.html).
29th, they stayed at "Kuwashiya" in Inamura
(Ibaraki); on the 1st of the next month, did at "Sensuya"
in Fusa (Chiba); and on the 2nd, they traveled by boat to worship at
Narita Fudoson, then rested at the house of Komatsu Senuemon. That night, they
journeyed up the Tone River by boat, returning to Fusa to spend the night.
After continuing the pilgrimage on the 3rd, they arrived home
around 10 PM. They were so tough.
It says, "Abiko was the last." It seems they chose
Ne-no-kami Gongen in Abiko as the final stop on their pilgrimage; it was a
shrine they visited frequently for worship.
