October
5th, with the completion of rice threshing, this
year's farm work finished.
From the 7th, Hyōzō and Mino went out to help at
other households.
18th, Fusajirō went to Kashiwa to see a play—though
it is unclear whether it was a village production or a professional
performance. He returned on the 21st.
November and December
On November 28, Hyōemon—the author of this diary—traveled to
Katō Village regarding a marriage proposal for Chiyo.
The records indicate the engagement took place on December 12,
followed by the wedding on the 21st. With the farming season
over, it was the time of year for weddings and adoptions.
A matchmaker arrived from Katō Village to escort the bride
(Chiyo).
The procession included three men for the palanquin, four for
the chest of drawers, three for the large storage chest, several for other
items, one for the straw-mat bags, and two for the carrying boxes; Gohei from
Kashiwa Village and Fusaji accompanied them to see her off.
It was a grand procession of over fifteen people in total.
24th, Hyōemon traveled to Edo to settle year-end
accounts with the samurai.
When visiting Honjo on the 25th, he identified
himself as "Yoshino Hyōemon, retainer to Inagaki Shuzen."
Although he was a village headman, he was permitted to conduct
himself as a samurai; a status reflected in his role arranging the funeral for the
feudal lord's family.
He returned to the village on the evening of New Year's Day, carrying
forty ryō (equivalent to approximately 4 million yen today) in his
pocket.
Edo was a bustling metropolis with plenty of places for leisure.
I want to know how Hyōemon spent his time there.
