16th, the rice planting at Yoshino family was
completed, and the "Sanaburi" celebration was held. (Rice planting
had begun on April 27th.)
18th, every household in the village finished
planting.
19th and 20th were designated as rest
days.
28th, they pounded mochi for the Sanaburi(早苗振) celebration and took the day off.
29th is noted as a "Sanaburi holiday"; yet
weeding in the fields is also recorded. It was likely a half-day off.
Since the entry for June 2nd says, "Today marks
the end of the Sanaburi holidays"; does that mean there was a five-day
break starting on the 28th? That sounds great!
Weeding in the fields (the process after planting) continued.
June
Hyōemon, who kept a diary, received udon noodles
(photo above) from Kiemon and Denjirō on May 30th and June 1st.
2nd, he received hiyamugi (chilled wheat
noodles) from Shiba-Ji.
5th, Hyōemon treated the head priest of Chōfuku-ji
Temple, the Yoshino family (three households in Shiba), Denzō and others to a
meal of udon.
This year the udon party was also held following the
rice planting and wheat harvest.
3rd, Katsuemon from Omoi Village came to invite
Hyōemon to join a pilgrimage to Mt. Fuji. He came again on the 20th,
but Hyōemon did not participate.
12th, a disturbance broke out over the local
shrine's drum—a dispute stemming from a lending arrangement.
13th, forty-six young men from five
villages—including Hyōemon’s—marched on Omoi Village to seize the drum; they
wore matching headscarves and bamboo-sheath hats, and carried paper lanterns.
The young men of Omoi Village confronted them armed with wakizashi
(short swords) and bamboo spears; some even climbed onto the roofs, ready with
stones and boiling water.
The village headmen from the five villages, joined by
Nishi-Mata, managed to quell the disturbance.
Thanks to Nishi-Mata’s efforts, new rules were established, and the matter
was settled on the 14th. Nishi-Mata was a big-brother type.
Heavy snow on the 23rd and light snow on the 26th.
The late Edo period (1603~1868) was cold, but it was also an abnormal
weather.
Furthermore, as there had been almost no rainfall since the
rice-planting season, the villages of Seto and Haige submitted petitions
for tax reductions.
I am afraid of a disastrous year.
24th, Tsunashichi, the village headman of Hiraga,
went missing after repair work on the embankment. People from neighboring
villages also joined searching for him.
30th, fortunately, he was found lying in a neglected
field some distance away. Such incidents did occur.
Although Tsunashichi survived the trouble, he passed away at the
end of November.
