Yamada Ryokan is a famous inn with onsen
(hot-spring) in the region. It is in a mountainous area near the border of
Nagano pref. and Niigata pref. in central Japan. Locals have gone there for
hot-spring cure. A kitchen for long-stay visitors is equipped.
The inn has a small museum which shows
us its history of over 450 years.
The main building was built more than 150 years ago; its reception also serves as the museum’s one. Six buildings including this one are designated as national cultural properties. The Buddhist Hall in behind is one of them; it is dedicated to the Healing Buddha (Yakushi Nyorai). Every visitor who comes here wants to get healthy.

A bathroom for day trip users is at the end of the building. The outdoor bath (inside the dot line) is really comfortable. The hot spring water (44℃) flows in directly from the source, and flows out (no circulation). We can soak in the bath tub for a long time because of the low temperature.
Hot spring analysis report is shown on the left. It is a sodium bicarbonate spring; it feels good on the skin.
We can drink the hot-spring water not only in the bathroom but also from the tap above. It was bitter for me.
Shiitake mushrooms were dried at the courtyard. I hope to stay overnight to have dinner and breakfast.
Yamada museum、
The museum shows Yamada family’s history and memories. We can also know the life in the mountain.

Exhibits are displayed even in the hallway.

Many items used in the inn and photos are packed in the exhibition room.

It was an honor of the inn that the hot-spring was selected as one of four excellent hot-springs in Japan, and was exhibited at a hot-spring expo in Germany in 1893. Kusatsu in central Japan, Beppu in Kyushu and Noboribetsu in Hokkaido were also selected.
The wooden board in 1885 is a hot spring analysis report; Doctor of Medicine proved the result.
Photos on the wall attracted me. Those show four seasons of Akamo family, who have lived here for a long time. Captions and descriptions are great.
Upper right (Spring). “The snow, which was four meters height, is disappearing day by day. It is the peak season for gathering the bounties of nature—wild mountain vegetables. Ostrich ferns (kogomi), Japanese spikenard (*udo*), angelica tree shoots (taranome), bracken (warabi), butterbur stalks (fuki), and dwarf bamboo shoots (nemagaridake). Chasing the receding snow, we go deeper and deeper into the mountains."
Lower right (Livelihood): livestock farming and charcoal making. It says that livestock farming became a good business, because there had been scarce earning in winter since then. (Japanese hadn’t eat animal meat before modern era.
Lower left (Akano’s residence). It was at the prefectural boundary. A vacant house was broken down by snow.
It’s a heavy snowfall area. Life in winter is harsh.
Old documents and arts are exhibited on the 2nd floor. The large map was used when the prefectural boundary was defined in 1702.
The etiquette while bathing (1806) is written on the board. It says, “Don’t quarrel. A suspicious person cannot enter. ---“. The people back then could not relax in bath, I just guess.
I had a lunch at “Oni-no-kuriya (kitchen)” in “Michi-no-Eki (roadside rest area), Otari”. Local rice is cooked in the traditional rice cooker (lower right).

The pelt of a bear was 200,000 yen. There are bear hunters in Otari, however, it is a big issue that bear injure or kill people recently. One of the reasons is the lack of hunters.
