The building in behind had many exhibits, which I wrote about in part1 (<link) of this article. I’ll show you special exhibition “Memories of the village and life in the mountain. Photos and articles of everyday use, depict the state of life of the ex-woodturners’ village in the Showa period (1926-1989)”. It was held in the building in front.

The four seasons of the village wherein nine families lived. The photos were taken mainly in around 1960, so woodturning work had already ended. However, we could know the life in the mountain village. The exhibits would change every other year.

Spring、春

Weeding of rice fields in 1958. I hear it is a painstaking work because an edge of a rice plant stings. Relatives joined and did it together. They had leeway for grinning. It is written, “Taking a short break, straightening their back, and taking a commemorative photo”.

There were fields but those were not large enough. It is said that their main earnings were forestry even after quitting woodturning job.

Summer、夏

Construction of an elementary school in 1953. Villagers looked vital. The school was unfortunately closed in 1972 because of lack of pupils.

It was written at the top, Time moved slowly in our village back then. It’s good! We don’t need to rush.

A village holiday in Jun, 1941. It says, “On the next day when all families finished rice planting, all villagers took a farming leave. All luds went to a pond for fishing. The guy on the left had proudly a big iwana (char) fish.”

School performance event in around 1965. In addition to pupils’ performance, mothers danced. They wore flashy kimono which they used during adolescents. Everybody would have cheered neighbors’ play.

Autumn、秋

Autumn festival in September, 1954. The banner was raised.

Winter、冬

The exhibit on the right is a sled, on which lumbers and so on were loaded. Snow helped to move the sled.

Snow covers the village. The photo was taken in around 1960.

New Year decoration on New Year's Eve in 1955. The annual events and those practices were similar to other mountain villages, I think.

The photo above is precious! There were houses and small rice fields. The Buddhist hall (upper left) still remains.

We can operate the turning lathe. It is very easy to rotate it while not carving wood.

I went down to the valley and saw a single-car diesel train departed from Hiraiwa station. Only 16 trains run a day in total, so I was glad to see it. It is an old familiar scenery. Btw, it would be possible that car would take the roll of the railway.

( This article “Fun of   the eros (性愛) ” is written only in Japanese , because it is too difficult for me to write in English due to lack of vocabulary about eros. If you kindly help me, please let me know.

Itaibara furusato (hometown) museum、

Itaibara is a mountainous  hamlet.   I went over the bridge and visited its tiny museum . There are twenty-three houses in it. The signboard says, “Cars cannot go inside the settlement, so  it keeps a traditional structure of a mountainous hamlet ." It is rare even in Tottori Prefecture.” I went upstream. The museum is next to the café (Nodoka) which is a renovated house. The  museum was a store house  of the café at present. The inside is  crammed with panels , which are interviews to ex-villagers and so on. It's similar to be a research presentation. The crests at the very back implies the history.

The Great Yoshiwara (published in 2018) 吉原はスゴイ

Excellent ★★★  This book is written about an authorized red-light district Yoshiwara which was in Edo (old name of Tokyo). There are many pictures in this book and you can understand all about Yoshiwara by this small book.  The author is a pretty actress who is devoted to Japanese history especially Edo city (https://hoollii.com/). She tries to depict the contribution of Yoshiwara to foster Edo culture. 1.     What is Yoshiwara?  Yoshiwara was north of Edo city and surrounded by  rice fields. Life in Edo, old Tokyo (published in 1959) 江戸生活事典

Very good : ★★★  (this is a long and interesting page)   Various entertainments at Edo or old Tokyo in the  Edo period are written in this book. I found a lot of fun here. I focus on the fun of common people, so I put aside the fun of Daimyo loads , samurais and rich merchants in this book.   In terms of people’s fun, Edo was the paradise definitely. There were a lot of funs in day time and night time. Edo attracted people especially from the country side. I started from my favorite chapter. Edo or old Tokyo was very busy city, Seasonal recreations are written at first. Travel of Isabella L. Bird in 1878, part

Arrival and visiting Asakusa Isabella arrived at Yokohama, near Tokyo, in May of 1878.   She travelled northern Japan including Hokkaido and western Japan including Ise mainly by rickshaw , then she left Japan in December. This diary was written as letters to her younger sister.  She described in detail, so we can understand what happened clearly.  She was 46 when she came to Japan, and she hired Japanese lad as an interpreter. I admire her coura ge because she was the first lady foreigner to visit inland.  This book is stored up in many libraries and Manga version was issued.  She observed various things such as behaviors of Japanese people, plants and stratums meticulously and she elaborated on scenic beauty. I leave those matters to other authors, I would like to focus on the fun of old Japanese which she saw in Japan.   The photo of Isabella in 1896 from the exhibition “Voyage of Unbeaten Tracks in Japan” 、1 896 年の...
