There was momentum to eliminate Westerners at that time. Ronin
(former samurai of Mito-han)
attacked the British Legation on the 28th of May. Therefore, many samurai
traveled on the Mito highway (kaidou).
Yoshino’s village was near the highway, so he was required to supply carriers
and horses to help the traffic. I’ll also mention about his mother who liked
going out so much in this article.
January、1月
In
the evening of the New Year’s Day, Oshin gave the birth to a girl, however she died
next afternoon. It’s so sad, but village women visited Yoshino on the 3rd.
They probably celebrated the safety of Oshin. It’s not rare that a newborn baby
died soon back then. (Reference: Rural
society in the Edo period and life of the village head(3/4))

On the 3rd, Yoshino brought send-off money to Hachiroubei
in Komagida who was one of relatives. He departed to Ise Shrine
(500km away) the next day. Three of his relatives went to Ise separately in
that year.
On
the 25th, a new kou
(religious group), which was called Uma(Horse)-tukuroi(grooming)-kou was
held. It was the same day when Tenjin-kou was held, in which children gathered.
I think people positively made a chance to gather and drink.
Yoshino’s
mother went out five times in this month. She went with her daughter to the
husband’s house, went shopping, staying at her relative’s house and so on. It’s
good that women were active.
February、2月
On
the 12th, Yoshino received a circular from the lord saying the remission
of Mr. Kizaburou. He stayed the village since January of two year ago, and
caused the trouble in which he drunk so much and took out a sword. He was detained! The next day, Yoshino released him.
Mr. Kizaburou stayed at Yoshino’s house. Shigesaburou came and set
his hair more than once a week. On the 8th of next month, Mr. Koizaburou lost
his temper with Tsuneshichi who worked as a servant for him. He complained
Tsuneshichi was so insensitive. So, Yoshino apologized next morning. Mr.
Kousaburou moved to Yokosuka village on the 11th of May. He was really hard to
deal with.
On the 22nd, Tsuneshichi came to buy unrefined sake
(alcohol). Yoshino sold homemade sake!
Btw, his mother went out three times that month to go to kou and
shopping.
March、3月
On
the 13th, Magobei and others from Nonoshita village came and
consulted with Yoshino. They participated in mujin (participants
accumulated money, then they decided the winner who got money by lottery.). They
asked to delay payment until autumn. Some mujin were held for fund-raising
such as renovation of a temple. I guess it’s not easy to withdraw from it. BUT,
surprisingly enough, Magobei got a winning lottery on the same day!
On the 25th, villagers (Jisaburou,
Kamekichi and Otojirou) received travel expense from Mitsumine-kou fund and went
to Mitsumine Shrine. Although it was around 120km away from their village, they
returned just five days after. They walked 48km a day on average!
There were two more stay-over trips in that year, which were
to Ohyama (Rinkichi and Ushigorou departed on the 26th of Jun) and
to Narita (Jirouemon and Kiuemon brought souvenirs to Yoshino on the 2nd
of September). Those were most enjoyable pastime back then.
Yoshino’s
mother went out just once in that month which was a nenbutsu(chanting)-kou
at Kyushichi’s house.
April、4月
On the
23rd, they started rice planting that was the hardest work. Meanwhile
they were required to help the trip of the high-class maid of Mito clan
on the 29th. It was rare that ruled class required works to farmers
in the busy season. Villagers were too busy to help her, so they hired seven
carriers and a horse at the post town. The rude maid didn’t pay attention to
farmers who were taxpayers.
Yoshino’s
mother went out six times including one overnight outing. She went to kou and
visited relatives before the rice planting season, although she didn’t join the
rice planting. She was a retired person.
