On the
10th, the Buddhism statue of Kannon in their community center
(Ryo) was painted or repainted. The master and four villagers welcomed
the painter with drinking. The inserting the eyes ceremony, which meant the
statue had the sprit, was performed by the head monk of Nakadera temple. It was
written, that udon noodle and sake (alcohol) were served and it was a special
holiday in order to drink sake. That’s fun time.
At the
night on the 10th, the master walked around the village, because there
was information that some were gambling. The next night, he called
Yasu-uemon to his house and tell him, “people gather often in your house” and
“neighbors will be equally to blame”. I don’t know why they could do lotteries
but couldn’t gamble. He didn’t hide this kind of secret matters, I think he was
frank but a bit innocent.

10日、「観世音彩色」ということで、仏像の色を塗り直したのでしょうか。「寮観世音」と書かれているのでお寺ではなく寮(今の公民館)の仏像だったようです。主は、仏師と村人四人で呑んでいます。「よろしくお願いします」というところでしょう。13日に披露です。「中寺方丈御出で開眼」とあります。「饂飩酒振る舞う。村中休日、為呑」ということで、楽しい一日になりました。
10日の夜に、「博奕有の様子につき、村中廻る」とあり、博奕の現場を押さえに行ったのでしょうか。翌11日に、夜、安右衛門呼び、「度々人寄有りに付」、「近所同罪になる旨、申し渡し」ということです。籤は良くても、博打は禁じられていたのでしょう。こういうことを書き残すというのは、オープンな人ですね。
On the
18th, rice planting started. It was the hardest agricultural
work. The master, his mother, Gisaburou, Okono, Oura (two men and three women)
were engaged in. On the 2nd of May, they finished planting of their
fields, but they started helping neighbors. On the 16th, they had “Sanaburi
holiday” which meant all villagers completed rice planting. It was a party
day.

18日から重労働の田植え始め。主、義三郎、母、おこの、おうらの5人で働きます。5/2に田植え仕舞い、その後、隣家の手伝いに母や義三郎が行き、5/16に「さ奈振、昼より休日」とありますから、村中の田植えが終わってパーティーです。
It says
it was a drought in this region, but they farmed smoothly, maybe they had rich
water resources. They finished harvesting and carried rice as tax to the
lord on the 14th of November. They partied all night on the day.
Moreover, they sent first-harvested mushrooms on the 17th of August
as usual. They also sent soba noodle powder and eggs on the 14th of
December as a winter greeting to the lord. They didn’t suffer from the drought.

この地域は、大干ばつだったと言いますが、吉野家は水利が良いのか、影響を受けなかった模様。刈り取りを終え、11/14に「御年貢米皆済、夜日待」とあり、夜通しパーティーをしています。また、8/17には例年通りお屋敷に初茸献上、12/14には「御屋敷へ寒中伺い、蕎麦粉、玉子献上」とありますから、飢饉ということもなかったようです。良かった。
November、11月
On the
28th, the Obitoki celebration for Aisuke (probably his son)
was held. Boys started using obi (band) like adults instead of himo (lace) to
wear kimono clothes when they became seven-year old in the past in this region. It continues as “Seven-Five-Three
(Shich-go-san) Festival” now which means a festival for 3-year-old boys and
girls, 5-year-old boys and 7-year-old girls”. After they went to the village
shrine, the master invited neighbors and had a sake and soba noodle party. He
was be affected with a fatal disease “smallpox” last year, but he recovered
completely. That’s fine!
Before
the celebration, his grandmother in law presented him the formal kimono set
including a black coat with the crest “Montsuki” on the 9th. Good kimono is
remade usually, so I want to know whether someone used the fabrics before or
not. Actually, I have kimono fabrics which my grandfather used. His kimono was
broken down and became fabrics. Those will be my kimono. It is one of Japanese
customs.

28日、愛輔の帯解きの祝いがありました。後の七五三、かつて千葉では七歳で祝うことが多かったようです。着物の付けひもをとって、普通の帯を締める祝いです。鎮守氏神に参詣した後、勘左衛門夫婦、次郎右衛門家内らを呼び、「酒蕎麦振舞」とあります。稲村(妻の実家)へは、赤飯を届けます。愛輔は疱瘡を越えて元気に生きています。
帯解きの祝に先立ち、9日に、稲村丈右衛門の母が、帯解き祝儀として、「上下と、黒紋付上着一つ、嶋小袖一つ」を持参しています。着物は仕立て直しができるので、誰かのお古かなあ。気になります。実は、私は、祖父の着物をほどいた生地を持っていますが、まだ仕立てていません。

On the 21st
of May, it is written, “Gisaburo went out somewhere in the morning, and he returned
next evening.” There are similar records on his diary this year. He seemed to
be diligent, so the master concerned a lot, I guess.
5/21、「義三郎、昼前より、いずかたに出で、翌夕、帰る」と書かれています。この類の記述が良く出てくるようになりました。義三郎さんは働き者のようなので、主人も気になることでしょうか。私もチェックしています。
On the
other hand, the master went to Edo often. It had been a one-day or two-day trip
before, but he stayed more this year, for example he stayed from the 16th
of December to the 20th. Edo was a joyful city. His father stayed there
for a long time before, and he stopped sending money.

一方、主人の江戸への出府が増えて、日帰りや一泊ではないケースもでてきました(12/16~20まで出府)。江戸は楽しいのでしょう。彼の父が江戸に入り浸り、彼が送金を止めたこともありましたね。
12月29日、「夜、村方の者共、歳暮に来る」と記載があり、この年も終わります。
