Lunar calendar was used back then and it happened that there was an additional month in that year.
On the 22nd, Mr. and Mrs. Yasugorou started
staying at the ryo (community center). They were from Nagoya in central Japan,
and they pilgrimaged various places such as Mt. Minobu. It was interesting that
there were traveling people then.
On the 27th, Okono, who might be a wife of the
master, went into labor. However, it was a difficult one. The master called
three doctors; he did his best. Her mother and villagers came to support her.
But, she lost her life the next morning sadly.
On the 29th, the coffin was carried out. Villagers,
relatives and the monks sent it off. She did rice planting in May; it was
tragedy, but he recorded in a calm manner.

22日、村方寮に、名古屋の安五郎夫妻が来た。身延山など霊場各所を巡っている人で、しばらく、寮を使いたいということです。こういう生活をしている人達がいたのですね。
27日、おこのさんが産気づきます。おこのさんは主人の妻だと思われます。とても悲しいことですが、出産で命を失います。難産で、医師三人を呼ぶなど手を尽くし、村人やおこのの実家の人も来ますが、翌朝、死去してしまいました。
29日、村人や親戚が続々と悔やみに来ます。長福寺などの僧侶も来る中、15時頃(八つ半過ぎ)出棺。おこのは、5月には主人らと共に田植えをしていました。とても悲しい出来事ですが、日記に綴られています。
August、8月
On the 1st, the rite after third day of her
death was held, and villagers were invited.
On the 3rd, he sent a letter to the lord, and he
received a reply of condolence.
On the 4th, they harvested early-ripening rice. Nine
villagers helped. On the 14th, villagers helped cultivation, too.
It was good mutual aid in the village.
On the 5th, the rite after seventh day of her
death was held. Relatives and villagers were invited. In Japanese Buddhism, the
rite is held every seventh day after the death. It is thought that the soul
of the dead would go to heaven after forty-ninth day (7 X 7days), so it is a particular
memorial service.
On the 13th, Zenzaburou who lived in Edo (old
name of Tokyo) visited for condolence. The info reached to Edo which is 20km
away from their village.
From the 14th, people visited him bringing
rice to make mochi cake or incense sticks. It was for the forty-nineth day
rite which would be held on the 19th.
On the 16th, they made mochi cakes and delivered
them to villagers including extended family. They informed them about the rite and invited for them to join, I think. On the next day, they brought mochi cakes to
the relatives who lived in other villages. The master asked Gonuemon, who
would go to Edo, to buy something. Gonuemon came back with something next
evening.
In the evening of the 18th, he invited villagers and
prayed for Okono. He also dispatched someone to deliver forty-nine mochi cakes
to Nakadera temple at night.
On the 19th, the forty-nineth day rite was held. The
head monk of Choufuku-ji temple, acquaintances, villagers and relatives joined
and prayed for her soul to go to the heaven safely. Her father and so on stayed
at the master’s house and left the next day. The details were unclear, but it was a
big event.

Mochi cakes which I sent for the memorial service、お供え
1日、おこのさんの三日斎。村の人を呼んで、弔います。
3日、御屋敷に飛脚を走らせます。4日に御屋敷から悔御状が返ってきました。
4日、早稲の稲刈り。次郎右衛門さんらから九人の助けが来ています。14日にも畑うないの手助けが来ており、互助が機能しています。
5日は初七日で、親類らで供養します。
13日、江戸浅草の善三郎さんが悔やみに立ち寄ります。知らせは江戸まで行っているのですね。
14日、この日から悔やみの人達が、餅米や線香を持ってきてくれます。19日の七七日(四十九日法要)に向けて動き始めました。
16日、餅つき。供え餅を村方や芝三家などに配ります。七七日法要の案内を兼ねていると思います。翌日は、柏など少し離れた縁者に、義介などが餅を持って行きます。
また、出府する権右衛門さんに、「色々買いもの頼」んでいます。権右衛門さんは、翌夕、買いものを持って来てくれます。
18日夕、村中の者を呼んで光明真言修業をします。夜に、「四十九餅」を持たせて中寺に使いを遣ります。
19日、七七日の法事です。塔婆を建てたようです。多くの親類縁者や村中の者を呼んで、長福寺の方丈に弔ってもらいます。おときさんの父と思われる稲村丈右衛門さんらは、翌日帰りました。
Seprember、9月
They started harvesting rice in full swing since the 23rd.
The village festival was held on the 9th; his married
daughter and her husband came to stay. The autumn festival was held before the harvest was finished.

23日から稲刈りが本格化します。
でも、その前の9日に祭があり、嫁いだと思われるおうら夫婦らが来て、泊まります。刈り取る前にも祭をしたのですね。
