Hokusai (1760 – 1849) was the most famous Ukiyo-e printing artist
who is loved by most of all Japanese. This museum was opened in 2016 where he
lived.
His works are shown in chronological order and we can take photo
freely. Hokusai created pictures for ordinary people, so he was keen to entertain
ordinary people. He drew pictures such as an innovative landscape, Yoshiwara (red-light
district) and a monster.
The entrance space to the exhibition room is also modern.
展示室へのアプローチもモダン
北斎生誕の地(東京両国)に、2016年に開館したモダンな美術館。展示品の撮影OKなのがありがたい。年代順に北斎の作品を見られる。北斎は庶民のための画家、庶民が喜ぶ絵を沢山描いたのだと思う。旅の風景画、吉原の絵、ちょっと怖い絵もある。

Evening bell at Shuzenji in Shizuoka where is a famous onsen hot spring resort even now. The women are sexy but it is not so different from other Ukiyo-e; it is ordinary in this period.
湯治場八景:修善寺の晩鐘。色っぽく描かれているが、この時代はまだ、普通の浮世絵だ。神奈川沖浪裏のようなイノベーションや迫力は無い。

He depicted human’s motion precisely.

The period of nishiki-e、錦絵の時代
Production of Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji (1830 to 1833, 70 to 73
year old). He developed the new genre that we call scenery pictures in ukiyo-e.
「富嶽三十六景」の制作(1830~1833、70~73歳)。今までの浮世絵には無かった風景画のジャンルを確立した。

There are touch-screen displays at the center of the room which show us various information about Hokusai. His works are hung on the walls in chronological order.
展示室の中央には、様々な知識を得られるタッチスクリーンがある。壁の近くに、年代を追って作品が展示されている。
The full-scale model of Hokusai’s studio when he was 84 year old. He lived with his daughter who was also a painter. They didn’t mind paper litters and concentrated on painting. Hokusai was already famous and popular while he was alive, but they were a bit odd.
北斎84歳頃のアトリエが実物大で復元。娘と住んでいで、ゴミの散乱は意に介さず、父子で絵を描いていたという。
His followers in Nagoya asked him to draw a big picture of Daruma. He was a really lovely person.
京都に移動中の名古屋では、支援者に依頼され、こんな大きなダルマの絵を書きました。
