Nagoya is the fourth largest city in Japan. There
are many exhibits of the internal war time and the Edo period in which Tokugawa shogun relatives ruled this area; Car manufacturer TOYOTA is the most
influential entity here now. Exhibits about daily life of ordinary people are
shown well so we can find fun of daily life such as going to entertainment
quarter, traveling and reading easily here.
We can take photo but
we cannot upload them on the website or printings, so photos without sources
are from website of this museum. (http://www.museum.city.nagoya.jp/index.php)
Ceramic 陶器
This area is famous for its pottery and porcelain. Manufacturing technique came from Korea early 5th century. This area has flourished
since then because there are abundant clay here. Beautiful ceramic are exhibited which give
people fun of owning and collecting. Volunteer guide recommended me to visit Aichi
Prefectural Ceramic Museum which has many excellent collections (http://www.pref.aichi.jp/touji/english/facilities.html).
Pot of the left side was made around 10th
century; it is glossy and beautiful. Ceramics of the right side were used by
ordinary people in the Edo period.
Book in the 13th century
The copy of a funny story book called "Shaseki-shu" is exhibited which was written by a monk called "Mujyu". Buddhist
doctrine is described in the book which was published around 1280. I was surprised with the
fact that some people could read this book and enjoyed the stories a long
time ago in Japan.
Travel in the Edo period
It is written “In spite of severe regulations,
people traveled for pleasure". There is a lacquered small sake alcohol pot with
a handle which was owned by Nanbu family who run the inn for daimyou lord in
Atsuta Miya Post Town. The pot is cool; it must make sake more tasty. There were two inns for daimyou lord and 248 inns for people in the Edo period in Astuta Miya Post Town which was on the way to the most popular tourist destination Ise Shrine. In the Edo period, tour guide books were very popular. The guide books of this area consist of 18 books which were published from 1844. Travel is fun for everyone. There is a printing which depicts an elephant is walking on the street in the city.
Replicas of portable things for traveling interested me. “Makura-soroban” (“makura” is a pillow and “soroban” is an
abacus) is a set of a pillow, an abacus, a lantern and so on. Because of packing technique which is one of Japanese cultures, the compact tool box was made for traveling. The fake sword which conceals and holds coins is exhibited too. Those
gadgets showed to me about fun of travel which is exciting unusual days.

Pleasure of the people たのしみ
It is a title of an exhibit panel. It
is written on that panel “Thrift was a common sense in the Edo period, so
luxury was prohibited. However people had their own enjoyment. People would go to a festival, a
seasonal event, a theater going, a sumou wrestling or a lottery. There were also small entertainment across the season; sakura flower
viewing at Hori-river bank in spring, autumn leaves viewing at Shichiji temple
and hagi flower viewing at Nakane.”
I was interested
in a copy of a picture scroll “Kyougen-emaki” which depicted theaters, red-light district and many kinds of shops along the Honmachi street in 1730s. There are Oosukannon temple and Wakamiya-hachiman shrine beside the lively street. The scroll is uploaded
on the website. (http://www.museum.city.nagoya.jp/collection/fine_portrait/lineup/new_screen4.html)
Special exhibition: Hokusai Darusen!
Hokusai was the most famous Ukiyoe printing
artist who lived in Edo, although he was also popular in Nagoya. He went to Kyoto
twice and he visited Nagoya on the way to Kyoto. A surprising thing is that he held
an interesting event in which he painted a large picture of Daruma monk in 1817; it
was around 200 m2 (18m height and 11m width). .

The enormous picture astonished Nagoya people and this event made people very happy. People gathered
at pubs and chatted. Moreover, relative goods were made such as lanterns of
Daruma picture.

Hokusai painted Manga in Nagoya
first. Manga meant picture which was made slowly and lengthy at that time. His
picture is very interesting; I like expressions, motions and forms.
Next two printings are from his masterpiece, 36 scenes of Mt. Fuji.
13 funs(楽fun)were found. Visited in December, 2017
