This community square is in the old post town in Toukaidou high-way
which was the second one from Kyoto. Two great high-ways in the Edo period,
Toukaidou and Nkasendou, met here. Fun of travel is exhibited in this square. The
cuisine models of inns at that time impressed me because it was my first time to see a traveler’s meal. People walked almost every day while traveling, however it must
be so exciting because they spent plain daily life usually. Definitely they enjoyed
eating good cuisines, drinking and chatting. It is good for us to experience various things. I tried woodblock printing and I could
print well regardless of simple tools. It excited me.
Japanese inn in the Edo period
Various things are exhibited. I felt the
breath of travelers and staff of the post town who hosted travelers at that time.
I was surprised because meals for
ordinary travelers are so gorgeous than I expected. Usually one soup and two
dishes were served for breakfast, while one soup and three dishes were served
for supper. The menu for an Osaka merchant who was traveling to Sendai (north
part of Japan) is shown. Meals are very important element of travel.

The title of this exhibit panel above is “Fun
of travel”. It is written “While traveling, people had fun of eating specialties
along the kaidou high-way, and enjoying the scenic spots. The specialties of Kusatsu post town were “Ubaga-mochi” (rice cake with
sweet bean paste) and “Aobana” (paper which was used to make famous Kyoto fabric).
The scenic beauty was a view of Lake Biwa.

Normal palanquin. It is written the
bar to carry is shorter compared with actual one. I think the rope grip on in the center of this shows the ride here can be bad.
Palanquin for a monk. I think the ride here can be also bad, but it may be better than the last one.

The photo above is a Japanese backgammon,
sugoroku. The goal is Ise Shrine, so long travel would have been a dream for
the people. I could imagine someone saying, “I don’t want this, I want to go”. In this
board game, there are twelve steps to reach Ise Shrine which means 13 day tour.

We can try four colors printing. At first, we print by black ink. We paste ink on a woodblock, set a frame, then set a paper and rub it.
Red ink is printed finally. It was printed
well in spite of rough alignment!
The photo below is a stone monument of a fork
of Nakasendou high-way and Toukaidou high-way. I thought about old travelers
who walked here with various thoughts. This post town is described in my favorite
novel “Fuujin-no-mon / Wind god gate” by R.Shiba.
