Farming
was starting, but daily life was so usual. I’m very happy if you like the peaceful
and plain life at that time.
On the 1st, they worked in the forest.
On the 2nd, they recovered rice seeds from the pond where seeds were soaked one week ago.
Two villagers (Kizaemon and Senmatsu) departed to Ueno Benten-kou in Edo. It becoming warm day by day in March in Japan. There is a beautiful word “mizu-nurumu” which is one of kigo (season words) required in a haiku poem. “Mizu” is water and “nurumu” means becoming warm; it indicates the cozy spring season. Moreover, it is before the busy farming season, so it was a good time for them to take a trip.
On the 3rd,
Shiba extended family gathered. It is the Girls’
Festival Day. They offered mochi cakes and sake(alcohol) to Naka temple two
years ago; maybe they also did same thing this year. On the Boys’ Festival Day,
they gathered so it was a custom of Shiba family on Sekku(seasonal festival).

On the 5th,
Mr. Yoshino was invited to the adoption event by Shichizaemon. The farming
season was starting, however family ceremonies were still held.
On the 6th,
they worked in the forest, but next day was the last day of this job.On the 7th, he visited Mujin-party at Nakamura house. Two men from other villages drew a prize in the lottery. Private lottery was very popular at that time. People casted a spell and relied on superstition such as keeping a top of a stone monument in their pockets in order to win. (Kiyushoran, published in 1830).
On the 8th, they started cultivating the rice field.

On the 9th,
they prepared for fertilizing.
Two
craftsmen came to finish walls of the community center. Mr. Yoshino visited Kizaemon’s house to attend Benten-kou. Kizaemon went to Edo on the 2nd to participate in Benten-kou, so perhaps it was a welcome party.
They had enough time to enjoy parties in March.
On the 10th and 12th, they prepared to introduce water to their rice field.
On the 14th, they cultivated the field. On the other hand, they planted paulownia trees, so they also maintained their forest.
On the 24th, his father went to Kashiwa to get young pine tree plants.
From the 27th to 29th, they planted young pine plants. They took care of forest which was an ecosystem to give them blessing of nature such as firewood. It is called “Sato(village)-yama(forest)” now.
On the
15th, Ise-kou was held. Mr. Yoshino offered money, sake and cakes.
It might be a fund to go to Ise Shrine, because some villagers visited there
next year.
On the
18th, Okono stayed at Inamura’s house for 4 days. His father also
stayed there on the 9th, so they were intimate with Inamura.
Nowadays, we meet our relatives only in the day time, because it can be troublesome to stay at their houses each other. However, it made their bonds
strong, I think.
On the 19th,
they made grain powder.
On the
20th, they fertilized. On the 21st, they started seeding. On the 22nd and 23rd, they seeded.
On the 24th and 25th, they made the water-proof walls of the rice field.
