Hotaka Shrine is the regional shrine of Azumino and the northern Japan Alps in Nagano Prefecture. The museum is in the ground of Hotaka Shrine, and it introduces the festival of the shrine. It is called Ofune (boat) Matsuri (festival). Azumi clan came here all the way from Kyushu Island. That's why the boat festival has been held in the mountainous area. The actual boat shaped float and the festival video show us the passion of Azumino people.

Ofune museum is at the corner of the ground.
There are two real floats in the exhibition room; the child boat is at the left side and the adult one is at the right side. Musicians play traditional Japanese instrument inside the floats. People make dolls every year and set them on the boats. They pull the floats and parade on the 27th of September which is the shrine festival day.
Dolls of Japanese battle in the medieval era (Onin War) are on the adult boat. The floats are collided together in the shrine ground. It’s very exciting! The frames are flexible, so they are not break down.

People also offer celebration dolls to the shrine when the main hall is rebuilt or is renovated regularly.
One hundred days before moving the deity to the new hall, people stand sakaki trees (sacred Shinto trees) for four kilometers around the shrine. It means the land inside the trees are the sacred area. It’s a solemn ritual.
Obisha-festival is carried out on the 17th of March. People forecast the harvest of that year by shooting the round target with an arrow. It was held on the 17th of January when we used the lunar calendar.
Oku-miya of the shrine (upper right) which is in a deep mountain has been beside Myojin Lake in Kamikouchi since 1770 at least. People have frequently prayed for raining. That’s why Okumiya stands beside the lake. On the 8th of October, Ofune (boat) Shinto ritual is held.
Mine-miya of the shrine is at the summit of Mt. Oku-hotaka (3190m, the highest mountain of the northern Japan Alps). It is said the Hotaka deity descended there. It is written on the panel, “The rain which falls in Hotaka mountains come to Azumino region and enrich people’s lives.” It is drinking and agricultural water. It’s the gift of nature.
Stone statues of Doso-shin deities, which were placed beside the road to carry salt to Azumino, are enshrined in the shrine ground.
The Doso-shin couple are pounding steamed rice to make mochi cake. There are many couple Doso-shin in Azumino, which are symbols of harmonious marriage.
