Fukaura history and folklore museum、

There is a narrow seaside area between the Sea of Japan and Shirakami Mountains. Fukaura is a port town which has a calm bay and a flat ground. Therefore, liners stopped here during storm in the Edo period (16031868).

The life has not been easy, but people have enjoyed living. They hold Nebuta festival in summer. The shape of floats in a seaside area are similar to the Nebuta festival in Aomori (Nebuta Museum WA-RASSE、ねぶたの家 ワ・ラッセ). However, Nebuta in a hill area are carried on shoulders because the roads are narrow slopes. When Nebuta meets the other one, people cry "Get out of my way!" in local language. It must be exciting.

The exhibition area is as same as two classrooms.

Fishing and farming equipment: a wooden rack for carrying a load on back has a dog fur which relieves the back pain. Many outfits for cold weather to pass the winter are exhibited. The cool wind in summer which is called “Yamase” causes a poor harvest of rice. It is not easy to live here.

Hanging scrolls: the interesting event on New Year’s Day in the Edo period is described.

It's a pity that photography is prohibited.

Fukaura port is just in front of the museum.

There is another museum “Kaze-machi-kan” in Fukaura, which introduces the liner in the Edo period.

The seaside area is very narrow. Here is near Iwasaki fishing harbor.

Juniko (twelve lakes) in Shirakami Mountains、

It is the UNESCO world heritage, because of the abundant primeval forest. I went there to see Blue Lake.

It was a beautiful season.

Walked on the pedestrian path to Blue Lake.

It is indigo blue. Mysterious!

Life in Edo, old Tokyo (published in 1959) 江戸生活事典

Very good : ★★★  (this is a long and interesting page)   Various entertainments at Edo or old Tokyo in the  Edo period are written in this book. I found a lot of fun here. I focus on the fun of common people, so I put aside the fun of Daimyo loads , samurais and rich merchants in this book.   In terms of people’s fun, Edo was the paradise definitely. There were a lot of funs in day time and night time. Edo attracted people especially from the country side. I started from my favorite chapter. Edo or old Tokyo was very busy city, Seasonal recreations are written at first. On the New Year’s Day, people went out to see the sunrise. Also winter is a good season to see Mt.Fuji .   In March we have a girls' f

The Great Yoshiwara (published in 2018) 吉原はスゴイ

Excellent ★★★  This book is written about an authorized red-light district Yoshiwara which was in Edo (old name of Tokyo). There are many pictures in this book and you can understand all about Yoshiwara by this small book.  The author is a pretty actress who is devoted to Japanese history especially Edo city (https://hoollii.com/). She tries to depict the contribution of Yoshiwara to foster Edo culture. 1.     What is Yoshiwara?  Yoshiwara was north of Edo city and surrounded by  rice fields.

( This article “Fun of   the eros (性愛) ” is written only in Japanese , because it is too difficult for me to write in English due to lack of vocabulary about eros. If you kindly help me, please let me know.

PartⅠ

(This museum is closed until 2025 for renovations. Looking forward to the reopening. Recent info. 最新情報: 江戸東京博物館 (edo-tokyo-museum.or.jp) ) You can understand most about Edo (old name of Tokyo, before 1867) and Tokyo in this huge museum. I focus on the Edo period here. Various enjoyments are exhibited such as festivals, theaters, reading and red light district Yoshihara, meanwhile difficulties in life are also exhibited. Inside the entrance gate, there is a full-scale model of Nihonbashi Bridge. On the other side of the bridge, samurai’s life is exhibited. On the bridge, we can see a model of Kabuki theater in the Edo period on the left and Tokyo city in the Meiji period on the right. Model of Nihonbashi bridge Left side of the br

Travel of Isabella L. Bird in 1878, part 1

Arrival and visiting Asakusa Isabella arrived at Yokohama, near Tokyo, in May of 1878.   She travelled northern Japan including Hokkaido and western Japan including Ise mainly by rickshaw , then she left Japan in December. This diary was written as letters to her younger sister.  She described in detail, so we can understand what happened clearly.  She was 46 when she came to Japan, and she hired Japanese lad as an interpreter. I admire her coura ge because she was the first lady foreigner to visit inland.  This book is stored up in many libraries and Manga version was issued.  She observed various things such as behaviors of Japanese people, plants and stratums meticulously and she elaborated on scenic beauty. I leave those matters to other authors, I would like to focus on the fun of old Japanese which she saw in Japan.   The photo of Isabella in 1896 from the exhibition “Voyage of Unbeaten Tracks in Japan” 、1 896 年のイザベラバード  1878 年(明治11年) 5 月に横浜に着
