Oyamazaki is the western part of Kyoto prefecture. There is a relic
of Battle of Yamazaki which was the game-changing battle in 1582. Yamazaki is a
narrow land between Mt. Tennohzan and Yodo River, so there were many battles
here. At the same time, it is a scenic place. Therefore, nobles built villas or
tea ceremony houses here. The local people emulated the noble culture and enjoyed it.

Tea ceremony room ”Tai-an” is in the temple called Myouki-an in front of the station (above). It was designed by the most famous tea master “Sen no Rikyu” and it was built
in the 16th century under the ruler H. Toyotomi. There is small tea
field in front of it. You need to make a reservation before you visit.

the museum. We walk along Saigoku-kaidou which was the highway to link Kyoto
and western Japan such as Hiroshima.

The relief on the wall of the entrance hall of this
building is the oil peddler, which is drawn on the picture scroll made
around 900 years ago.
Oil was the necessity as fuel of lumps until
the 20th century. Oil merchant group in Oyamazaki was under the
protection of Iwashimizu-Hachimangu Shrine which is opposite side of Yodo
River. They were approved to sell oil to western Japan exclusively,
moreover they were exempted from the payment to the check points in 1311. It was
their peak time, because rulers in the 16th century including
Toyotomi abolished the monopolies.

The emperor Gotoba(left) and Teika Fujiwara who
was a noble and a poet: The emperor built a villa in Oyamazaki and enjoyed
a poem party (competition) and hunting. Villagers had a poem party, too.
I was surprised with their high culture level to read, to write, to create poems and to evaluate them.

Taian (tea ceremony
room) which was partially rebuilt in the museum, and Rikyu: Toyotomi built Yamazaki castle and
gathered merchants and tea masters. Rikyu built Taian, and tea ceremonies were
held often there. It was the most excellent tea ceremony at that time.
