The castle was burned by airstrike in 1945; the castle tower was rebuilt in 1959 and the palace was done in 2018. The color of the interior is whitish not brown because it’s new. I impressively imaged the castles in the internal war time (16th century) which would also be whitish.
We cannot find any fun things for ordinary
people. However, people in the Edo period (1603~1868) were proud of their castle where
their lord was. There were around three hundreds of han
(local autonomous government) and many of them had its own castle. Nagoya castle
was one of the largest one at that time and I’m sure it met the expectation
of the people in the territory. Btw we cannot enter the castle tower because
the earthquake-resistance strength isn’t enough.

There are two rooms in the entrance hall (Genkan). Tigers and leopard on the wall glared guests who sat down on the tatami floor, and threatened them. It is typical design of an entrance of a samurai’s palace.
We proceed from the entrance hall to the main hall.
There are three rooms in the main hall (Omote Shoin). The lord met a guest.
The lord sat down in the innermost room and met the guest.
Behind the main hall, there is a reception hall (Taimenjo) in which the lord talked with vassals or had a party. There are four rooms. Peaceful sceneries were drawn on those walls unlike the entrance hall where the tigers in the pictures threatened guests. The hallway was protected by sheets.
The area behind the reception hall is the hall for the shogun visitations. It was built when the 3rd shogun Iemitsu stayed on the way to Kyoto in which he met the emperor. There are six rooms and it says “The interior is the height of luxury.” The lord was the relative of the shogun, but was in awe of him.

At the innermost of the palace building, there is a bathing room only for the shogun. It was a pity that I couldn’t visit because of COVID-19. I attach the photo of the brochure. It’s the best bathroom back then.
The serving preparation room (Kami-gozensho) was used for warming up foods for the shogun. BUT, the hall for the shogun visitations was used only few times (it might be once).
The serving preparation room (Shimo-gozensho) in the reception area of the lord would be used. There is an exhaust port at the ceiling (lower left).
Nagoya castle before destruction by fire of the air strike at the end of WW2; It’s a pity that we lost longstanding buildings designated as the national treasures.
The photo above is a floorplan which is printed on the brochure. I’m sorry that it’s a small map.
