Shouno post town, which started its operation in 1624, was the one of latest ones on Toukaidou highway which linked Kyoto and Edo (old name of
Tokyo). Unfortunately, it was not the road to go to Ise shrine which was the
most popular pilgrim destination, so there were not many people who went
through this town.
This small museum shows us such as a historical document of Honjin
inn, old outfits and a bulletin board. Sorry to say, photography is prohibited,
however the staff guide me kindly.

The
specialty of Shouno was a roasted rice grain which is exhibited here and we can
know how to make it. First of all, unhulled rice is swelled in water, then it
is roasted, and it is crashed finally. It was packed in a small straw bag and
was sold as a souvenir. The photo below is an exhibit of Toukaidou Tenmakan in
Tsuchiyama post town which is the fourth post town from Shouno.
There are a stone monument and a guideboard at the east entrance of
the town. Shouno is not a tourist spot and there are not so many people even
now.
Shouno
is famous because Hiroshige Utagawa depicted it in his popular Ukiyo-e printing
suite “Toukaidou fifty-three post towns”, and Shouno is his masterpiece. Its
title is “White rain at Shouno”. It is said he drew the scene of a Suzuka River
bank which is beside Shouno post town.

It was also a rainy day like Hiroshige’s
printing when I visited. I felt the atmosphere of an old highway.
Ishiyakushi post town、
It is
just four kiro-meter east of Shouno post town. The road remains the atmosphere
of Tokaidou, too.
Here is not a tourist spot but there is a
private museum. (reservation is required)
