- Gatherings and trips
- Gatherings and trips
They started farming on the 11th
which means they had a 10-day New Year’s holiday from 1st of January.
We Japanese did not have Sunday as a rest day. I think it would have been
precious relaxation for them.
Young men gathered at night on the 9th,
they stayed together and waited for sunrise. They might have enjoyed the party
with sake (rice wine).
Another gathering to worship the Benten
god was held at night of the 23rd.
Two people who were given a donation
from Kou-group departed for Ueno, which is 20km away, in order to join Benten-Kou.
It must be a big fun for them to go to Edo with his friend.
His father who was a retiree left on the 25th and went to Edo. It was a half-day trip. He returned on the 28th. I am sure he enjoyed entertainment in Edo for 3 days. He visited Edo frequently this year.

Studying
It is very cold in this area. The high temperature doesn’t s go over 10 degree Celsius and low temperature is less than 0 degree Celsius sometimes in February.
I am surprised that the private school started Tenarai or lessons on the 7th of February. It’s too late! Tenarai consisted of reading, writing and calculating. It was effective system, so it is said that 50% of men and 20% of women could read in this time. In Edo, 90% of people could read. All samurais could read and write of course. The literacy of Japan was more than the UK’s during this time probably.
-Peaceful daily lives continued in Shibasaki.

They had a party called Mujin. They
enjoyed lottery in that party. The master Tuneemon stayed in Shigesaburo’s
house because Benten-Kou, which was the party for worshiping Benten-god, was
held. I think they enjoyed talking, eating and drinking.
Futon mattress repairmen who made
futon softer by treating cotton inside futon came to the village.
Visitors came from Koyasan which is
more than 600km away. They asked donations for building a monument in Koyasan. I
understand the reason why there are so many buildings in Koyasan. They walked
across Japan in order to gather donations, that's why.
