“Matsukawa” is in central Japan (Nagano
prefecture); it’s famous for fruit producing area, such as apple, pear
and grape. However, fruit planting started in 1915. The traditional industries
like rice farming, soy bean planting, sericulture and transportation by horse are
exhibited; those were livelihood of locals.
The section of local festivals is nearby the entrance. The major one is “Onbashira-matsuri”; people cut trees, then raise them in the shrine. The model between the portable shrine and the photo panel shows how people draw a tree from the mountain to the shrine. Such a big ritual empowers locals.
There are exhibits from the primitive age to the modern one.
The tiny earthenware and miniature stone tools on the left attract me. Those were ritual implements? I’m happy if those were toys! The stone knives on the right were made from local hard stone (obsidian).
The Buddhist statue in center is a replica; the real one is in the local temple. It is said that the statue was brought Kyoto in the Heian period (794-1185): Kyoto was the capital back then. Matsukawa was on the highway which linked Kyoto and northern Japan, therefore, products and culture came from Kyoto even in the ancient era.
The highway was moved from nearby Tenryu River to the hill. It became an official highway (kaidou) in the Edo period (1603~1868) and played the role of logistics.
There was a direct transportation by horse “Chuma”, which didn’t stop at a post-town. They played an important role back then.
In the culture section of the Edo period, great people, school for ordinary children (terakoya) and so on are exhibited. The local museums nearby (Takamori and Toyooka) have similar section; the area is far from Tokyo and Kyoto, however, culture has been rooted. Matsukawa was a hometown of a poet (Ohshima Ryota) who had more than three thousand disciples in Tokyo back then.
The lunch boxes are displayed at the section of old utensils. There are six small boxes inside the large box (lower left). People brought them to open-air theater or blossom viewing. It is surely a pastime.
The man sprinkles excrement as fertilizer. Farming in mountainous area was required technique. It’s painstaking.
There was a special exhibition about the Showa period (1926-1989). Many postcards of tourist spots were displayed. We bought them a lot before; I wonder whether those were for gifts or were for us. Postcards brought us memories of trips. Seeing cards is easier than seeing photos in a smartphone.
Katagiri post-town on Ina Kaidou (highway)、
I felt the relic of the old post-town. The building on the right is a gate of the developer of the town. He was ordered to construct the town in 1593. The gate was rebuilt in 2009.
There is a channel at the end (masugata) of the town.
