Takayama is one of the most popular tourist spots of foreign visitors, which is in central Japan. The locals hold a festival in spring and autumn. It is well-known among Japanese people for puppet performance on luxurious festive float. Residents of Kamimachi (town) is in charge of a spring one, which is an annual festival of their shrine (Hie Shrine).
I visited the festival in
2024, which is held on 14th and 15th of every April. Note
that the parade of floats is cancelled on a rainy day; you have to see them at
their garages.
The deity of Hie Shrine had already got on the portable shrine, which was set beyond the bridge. There were three floats in front of it.
Each puppet (upper right) on float performed one by one. It means the puppets entertained the deity by performance.
The lion dance performers went to the portable shrine.
Music band followed the lion dance procession. Towners including students took the role performers, therefore, it was a day off from school. Their float (Kaguraday) was at the end of the procession.
The float crossed the bridge and went to the portable shrine. They lead the procession of the deity.
Some neighborhood associations don’t own float. An association gave their float to another one in the neighboring city around 150 years ago; they planned to build a new float. However, they couldn’t; Meiji Restoration occurred back then. It cost around three million dollars (current value) to make a float. They reluctantly made the lacquered cart above instead in order to join the procession of the portable shrine. I was sorry to hear that, but I understood how their passion to join the procession.
The procession of the deity paraded in their town. He got rid of bad luck in the town. Towners accompanied him as dancer or musician.
Carts with banners from neighborhood associations followed the lion dance and the music band.
The portable shrine (upper left) came finally. The members of the procession looked a bit tired.
Towners saw off the procession; the deity returned to Hie Shrine.
Each float also returned to their town.
Kaguradai (float) reached at its garage. Surprisingly enough, around twenty children got off the float.
It is said that locals celebrate the arrival of spring at the same time. Sakura (cherry blossom) blooms at this season.
