Iwase in central Japan was a port of call for the Kitamae-bune cargo ships which sailed the Japan Sea from the 18th to the 19th century. It is at the mouse of river; products of Toyama Plain were transported to Iwase and were shipped. Therefore, large merchant buildings remain until now. Huge Baba Residence is one of them.
Baba Family contributed to the local society.
For example, they donated around ten million dollars at current value when the high-school
was built. They did not just save wealth but spent it for people; it is a
valuable practice of a wealthy family, I think.
From the observation deck, we can see roofs of Baba Residence (in the white dot line) and the mouth of Jinzu River.
There are old and large buildings along the main street (Ohmachi-Shinkawamachi street). There were landing places behind the houses on the right, which were already filled up.
There are restaurants on the street.
A model of a cargo ship is placed at an open space in front of the Baba Residence.
Baba Residence、
There was scaffold when I visited; the building was damaged by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake which occurred on the New Year’s Day in 2024.
The family was a shipping agency. The hallway above is thirty meters long, which linked the entrance and warehouses; there was a landing place beyond them.
The beams of the business space (oi, around 60㎡) were reused; those were parts of the old residence which were burned in 1863 by a big fire.
The living room (chanoma) faced the hallway. The ground glass of the sliding doors block visitor’s view; it’s good.
Large bathroom、
Meals for many people would be cooked in the kitchen in the extension. Mades were happy even in winter because the well in the kitchen.
There are large windows in the second floor. They could see the warehoused and the landing place.
The Baba family lives in the neighboring building (above).

Mori Residence、森家
Mori family was a shipping agency, too. The wooden building was rebuilt in 1878, after the big fire in 1863. The building is closed because of the damage of the earthquake; it will reopen after 2026.

The building was not rebuilt, but was renovated. Looks nice! The owner didn't want to spoil the cityscape.
Masuda-shuzo (sake brewery, above) is at the south-end of the street. It was established in 1893 in Hokkaido. However, they returned to their home town in 1905. It is one of the big breweries in Toyama prefecture; they supply sake to many restaurants and Japanese pubs (izakaya). I tasted a high-grade one (junmai ginjo); it’s good!
