The museum was established by Maruyama Taro (1909-1985), who devoted himself to crafts. He was a collector and a craftsman. His collections including his crafts and the building were donated to Matsumoto city in Nagano prefecture of central Japan; those are opened to the public.
The museum is surrounded by many houses, however,
Inside the gate, we can see the other space. It’s calm and classy.
The founder’s photo and message are displayed at the entrance of the exhibition room. “Beauty in handmade daily commodities made by unknown craft men” captures not only him but also many Japanese people.
Couple dousojin (deities) are depicted on the hanging scroll. There are many stone statues of dousojin in Matsumoto area.
Many crafts are exhibited. The elaborate one in lower right is an ornament of a sake bottle offering to a deity.
The exhibits above were horse gear which were used in Takayama city in the neighboring prefecture. Those are well-used commodities, and are also artworks.
The item at lower left is named “kurawanka” plate. I was astonished if it was used on a kurawanka boat in Osaka. The boat served dishes to passengers on a liner. The passengers sometimes threw plates into the river, because they were asked for payment based on the number of plates. (reference: The Yodo River Museum)
The outside view relaxed me because the exhibition room was a fireproof warehouse which has thick wall.
The mother-of-pearl paperweights were made by the founder.
I proceeded. Chests of drawers are displayed; some of them were used in a ship. Statues of ten kings of hell including Yama are set at inner most.
I went down the stairs. Signboards are displayed there. Those are not industrial products but very crafts.
The last exhibition room is really classy. The founder enjoyed owning beautiful items including his house.
There is a message from the director (the founder?). It says “The chairs have been used more than one or two hundred years. Hope treat them with respect."
Cafes in Matsumoto、
I introduce cafes which equip handcraft furniture made in Matsumoto. Both cafes have calm atmosphere designed by same man (Mr. Ikeda). There are restaurants and hotels which also equip Matsumoto furniture.
Coffee Marumo、
The shop is beside Metoba River at the heart of Matsumoto. It is a part of a hotel which was built in 1887. The café started operation in 1956. I had a breakfast special (upper right).
Yatoro Onkan、
The café is a tearoom of Hotel Kagetsu (upper left) at the city center.
I also enjoyed a breakfast special (egg sandwich.). It’s good!
The photo above shows Nakamachi street near the cafes. There are many shops on the street; the shop of the founder of the museum is also on the street “Chikiriya”. Unhappily, the street was burned out in 1878; buildings along it were rebuilt as fireproof one.
Before industrial products spread,
commodities were handmade; some of them were beautiful crafts. Nowadays,
handmade products are so expensive that we use industrial ones as utensils. I
think some industrial products are equal to art crafts, if we think the
products are beautiful and we favorite them.
