Nanki Kumano Geopark、

Southern Kansai region is rich and harsh in nature. The nature has entertained pilgrims who go to grand shrines of Kumano in the south of Wakayama Prefecture. I’ll show you six spots on the map below. The legend says that a  boss of pirates stationed here ; people were terrified of him like a demon. Emperor Kanmu (737-806) ordered the general to conquer him. There are actually many caves in which pirates seemed to hide. There was a teahouse  for visitors. Japanese tourism industry has a long history. It is said that  even dogs cannot pass through . Salt attached my hands because I had to hold the handrail. The  lion rock  is near the demon’s castle.

Taiji Whale Museum、

Fishermen of Taiji developed to catch a whale in groups in the 17 th century . It was said that the catch of a whale enriched people of seven villages; people utilized all parts of a whale including baleen and tendon. It was a major industry of Taiji. In the modern era, they used a western-style harpoon gun. In 1988, Japanese government quit catching a commercial whaling. Therefore, they only catch a small whale which comes in to their bay; but it accounts for 28% of their catch in 2012 (834 tons in total). I would like to explain the old and systematic whaling in which more than five hundred fishermen were engaged. I’m sure that it was an exciting work like a festival . A small...

Boki-do cave bath (Hotel Urashima)、

The bath is very famous and popular because the hot spring gushes in a large cave by the ocean . “Boki” means “forgetting to return” and “do” means “cave”; so you forget to go home if you soak in the bath of Boki-do . That’s true! The landscape is good, the hot spring water is good, and the bath tab is good. Photography is prohibited in the bathroom of course, so I’d like to introduce photos displayed at the hotel. I went to Hotel Urashima above which has Boki-do by exclusive ferry of the hotel. The entrance of Boki-do is in the cave . We cannot take photos inside. It is a salt-containing hydrogen sulfide spring. The scent of sulfur made me feel good for health. The 54℃ water gushes 125 tons a day; it’s an abundant amount of hot water. It is said,  nobles enjoyed bathing when they visited Kumano shrines ...

Kumano Nachi Taisha (shrine)、

Kumano Nachi Taisha (shrine) is one of three grand shrines of Kumano in Wakayama Prefecture of western Japan. Pepple across Japan have visited Kumano since more than a thousand years ago . Emperors also visited; the 77 th emperor Goshirakawa (1127-1192) visited thirty-four times for example. Old roads to Kumano still remain, which are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site along with three grand shrines. I visited Matsumoto Pass on the old road (below), then visited Kumano Nachi Taisha. While seeing solemn scenery, I felt the mindset of pilgrims in the old days. There are  Buddhist statues  at the pass (129m above sea level). It’s a good hiking course, and it takes around one hour.

Shingu in Wakayama prefecture of western Japan was a city built originally in front of a famous shrine , Kumano Hayatama Taisha. It is at the mouth of Kumano River, so it has been a distributing center of woods which are cut in its mountainous area. The museum shows us not only its history but also livening of local people. I took photos under the approval of Shingu City. The museum is next to Asuka Shrine. The signboard says,  “ Many  mishotai , images of Kumano deities in the forms of Buddha, dating back to the 12 th  to 15 th  centuries have been discovered ---, and tell us about  religious thought particular to Japan amalgamating Shinto and Buddhism ”. Mishotai are exhibited in the room of the 1 st fl...
