Seki cutlery gallery and Feather Safety Razor Co. Ltd. museum、岐阜関刃物会館とフェザーミュージアム

Seki in Gifu prefecture of central Japan is the cutlery production area which ranks with Solingen in Germany. Half of Japanese cutlery is made here. They started producing swords in the medieval era and making kitchen knife and razor blade at present. I visited two museums about cutlery.

岐阜県関市は、日本を代表する刃物の産地です。包丁など日本の刃物の約半分を生産しています。ドイツのゾーリンゲンと並ぶ世界的な産地でもあります。中世には刀剣の生産を起源とし、今は包丁やカミソリの生産で栄えています。

包丁などの刃物を展示販売している岐阜関刃物会館と、向かいにあるカミソリの国内シェアNo1・フェザーの博物館を訪ねました。

なお、関には、市立の関鍛冶伝承館があり、関鍛冶の歴史や刀剣、ナイフを展示しています（https://www.sekikaji-mus.com/)。

Seki cutlery gallery、岐阜関刃物会館

The ruin of the blacksmith’s workshop in the late Muromachi period (1338-1573) is under the floor of the entrance hall. It is written “The Birthplace of Seki Blacksmithing”.

室町後期に鍛冶作業を行った遺跡が会館の下にあり、“関鍛冶発祥の地”と書かれています。関では、700年余り前から刃物を作っていました。

Various cutlery is displayed and are sold. Those are popular among foreign tourists as souvenir.

会館では様々な刃物を売っています。刃物は外国人のお土産品としても人気ですね。

The price of best-sell kitchen knife is around ten thousand yen, because those are affordable. I bought a knife (\8360) which is really sharp. There are much expensive ones of course.

普及品の関虎徹、8360円を購入しました。よく切れます。高額品はありますが、お手頃な1万円前後が人気商品です。

Nail clippers and scissors for office and medical uses are also sold.

The company retains the largest market share of razor blade in Japan. The museum is professed as the first general cutlery museum in the world.

The exhibits of the first floor are about the company history.

１階はフェザーの歴史の展示

The exhibition of the second floor is unique; all of them are about cutting. Cutting by pressing, by interposing, by shaving; there are many methods and tools. You can try most of all.

２階は切ることに特化した体験展示。押して切る、挟んで切る、削って切る、なるほど。

All Japanese people know the company as a razer manufacture, however few know it produces scalpels for surgical operation. They horn the cutting skill !

髭剃りだけでなく、医療用のメスなども作っているのですね。切るを極めた会社です。

関善光寺から見下ろした関市街

Seki festival is held on the street in April. Illuminated floats parade on the street (25 floats joined in 2025). Groups of citizens spend half a year to make their floats and join the parade. It’s a vital city!

本町通り（２丁目交差点）。４月に行われる関まつりは、電飾された「あんどんみこし」（2025年は25基参加）がパレードし熱気に包まれます。自治体など市民のグループが半年かけて作ったみこしです。元気がある街です。

I had an udon noodle as lunch at Kiya; the soup is poured on it. The black balls on the right are deep-fried chicken (karaage). Shiitake (mushroom) and hijiki (seaweed) in flour make them black. Their smell and taste are good! Those are specialties.

ランチはぶっかけ型の「ころうどん」と関名物の「黒唐揚げ」（右）をいただきました＠喜屋。しいたけとひじきの粉末で黒くしています。しいたけの香りがし、美味しいです。

Very good : ★★★ (this is a long and interesting page) Various entertainments at Edo or old Tokyo in the Edo period are written in this book. I found a lot of fun here. I focus on the fun of common people, so I put aside the fun of Daimyo loads , samurais and rich merchants in this book. In terms of people’s fun, Edo was the paradise definitely. There were a lot of funs in day time and night time. Edo attracted people especially from the country side. 吉原はスゴイ‐江戸文化を育んだ魅惑の遊郭（堀口茉純、 2018 ）人の楽しみの発見度： Excellent ★★★ This book is written about an authorized red-light district Yoshiwara which was in Edo (old name of Tokyo). There are many pictures in this book and you can understand all about Yoshiwara by this small book. The author is a pretty actress who is devoted to Japanese history especially Edo city (https://hoollii.com/). She tries to depict the contribution of Yoshiwara to foster Edo culture. Heisenji (Fukui prefecture, central Japan) was established in 717 as a gateway to the worshipped mountain “Hakusan” . There were six thousands of priest dwellings in its primetime in the medieval era; it was also a warring group which had priest soldiers. However, it is a calm and sacred place now.
