Old town of Mino City and its museums (1/2)、美濃の町と資料館（part1）

Mino City in central Japan (Gifu prefecture) prospered as a commercial district of Japanese paper (washi) which is high-grade one for official documents (in the past), sliding door and so on. A popular event (Mino Washi Akari Art) is held in autumn; paper lanterns on the streets are lighted.

There are few souvenir shops, because people live and work in the district. Although it’s usually a calm city even during the lantern event term, it becomes enthusiastic one during festival. I respect residents who continue the events and preserve the city. The photo below shows one of the two main streets; merchant houses built more than 150 years ago are along the street.

岐阜県美濃市は、文書や障子などに使われた高級品の美濃和紙の集積地として栄えました。秋に行われる美濃和紙あかりアート展は、江戸時代から続く古い街並みを美しく、かつ、上品に照らします。

今も人びとが住んで、商売を続けている美濃の町は、みやげ物屋が少ないと言われることがあるそうです。静かな町ですが、祭りのときは情熱的な町に、あかりアート展のときは落ち着いた美しい町になります。メリハリを楽しめます。人々がこの町と行事を守っていることが素晴らしいですね。

上の写真は、卯建が上がる街。江戸時代の商家が残ります。町は目の字型の通り。こちらは一番町通りです。目の字の縦の線です。

 

Old town of Mino City、美濃の町

It is another main street. A deity seems to be enshrined at the second floor on the right.

こちらは二番町通りです。右側の家の二階には、神様が祭られているようです（枠内）。

The stone with an iron ring by ex Mutou Family Residence was used to hitch a horse. Horses carried paper from a river port to the city, so there were many stones like that. It doesn’t work now, but some are set even until now.

旧武藤家住宅の横には、石に鉄環を取り付けた馬つなぎ石があります。川湊から町までの間には、たくさんの石が置かれました。今は不用な品ですが、残しています。

The road above is a side street between the two main streets. The building (lower right) is an inn (Okasen) which has been run more than around two hundred years.

目の字の横線に当たる通りにある岡専旅館さんは約200年の歴史を持つ旅館です。

An ex-grocery store is renovated to a confectionery shop. The old sing board is remained. They tend to conserve old facility.

食料品店だった建物を利用したお菓子屋さん。古いものを継承していますね。

There is also a Korean restaurant. 韓国料理屋さんもあります。

 

Mino Washi Akari Art Museum、美濃和紙あかりアート館

The building was built in around 1931 as an industrial hall.

昭和16年頃に立てられた産業会館を利用した資料館です。

Prize-winning works of the lantern event are displayed. So beautiful!

毎年秋に行われる「あかりのアート展」の歴代の入賞作品などが展示されています。美しい！

The work won a grand prize. 大賞受賞作品です。

Mino Washi Akari Art、美濃和紙あかりアート展

I visited again in October of 2024. Paper lanterns were set by the street.

日を改めて行ってきました。通りには和紙の灯籠が並べられています。

It’s a long-term event (from 12^th of October to 30^th of November in 2025, for example), so each paper lantern is put inside a plastic case. On the main event say, the lanterns are set in the center of the street, the cases are removed and the street closes to vehicles.

開催期間が長いため（2025年は10月12日から11月30日）、灯籠はアクリルケースに入れられ道端に展示されています。イベント日には車両通行止めにし、道の真ん中に灯籠が集められます。

So elaborate!　手が込んでいますね。

The sunset created fantastic atmosphere.

陽が落ちて幻想的な雰囲気になってきました。

It was also magnetic after dark.

すっかり陽が落ちたあとも、魅せられますね。
