Kakegawa in Shizuoka Prefecture was a post town on Toukaidou highway which linked Edo (old name of Tokyo) and Kyoto. Kakegawa castle is very rare, because it has a palace in which a daimyo lord lived and conducted the affairs of his state. The palace was built int the late Edo period (1603~1868). After visiting Kakegawa castle, I went west on the highway.
I entered the castle from the main gate (Ohte-mon).
The photo above is an entrance of the palace. A palace is not a theme of this blog (Fun of Good Old Japanese). However, there are only four palaces of daimyo lords which were built in the Edo period and were actually used as a palace. Nijo castle (Kyoto), Kouchi castle (Kouchi) and Kawagoe castle (Saitama) also have palaces.
The great hall has a big drum, which informed samurais of gathering at once and so on.
The lord conducted the affairs of his state in the room above.

Behind it, there are wooden floor rooms in which samurais worked. It’s cold and the interior is worse.
The castle tower is near the palace, however, it was renovated when I visited. Now you can see the wooden building.

People in Kakegawa city are probably proud of their castle.
The winding road of the city bothered enemy army to come close the castle.

SHISEIDO Corporate Museum、
A cosmetic company “SHISEIDO” has a factory in Kakegawa; there is a museum in the site. However, I’m sorry to say that we cannot take photos inside the building.
The photo above is a brochure. They manufacture the western style cosmetics, and deliver to the world; it’s a excellent company.

Ex-Toukaidou highway and Yusan-ji (temple)、
There are pine trees along the old highway. Those trees blocked sunlight or wind, and protected travelers. The busiest highway in the Edo period is a prefectural road now.
I visited Yusan-ji which is near the old highway. It is said that it brings us benefit about curing eye disease. I use PC almost every day, so I get bad eyesight. Btw, the gate beyond the stairs was moved from Kakegawa castle. The temple looks like a castle.
I climbed in the natural forest.
I prayed for my eyes at the main hall of the temple. It was comfortable and sacred atmosphere.
I also visited Kasuisai (temple) near Yuzan-ji. Its benefit is fire protection. Two tengu protect the main hall.
