This
museum is located in the center of the Kanto plain which is the largest plain in
Japan, just 40km north of Tokyo. The museum is surrounded by rice fields and it has a very peaceful atmosphere. Sakano clan was the richest farmer here and their house is so excellent and so fabulous. However it would be difficult
to find the fun of old ordinary Japanese, we could understand the rich
farmer’s life. The main building was built in the 18th century.
This is the gate
of the Sakano house. During the time, only samurais were permitted to build this type of gates
which were called “Yakui-mon”.
From the gate to the main building、
There is a big kitchen space on the earthen floor inside the entrance
for the family. (There was another entrance for guests.) The space is connected to
the living room. Cooking stoves are so big, and horses for the star festival are exhibited. The straw horses are made on the 7th of July which
is a day of the star festival. Children draw the horses daytime. Then offer
sweets and water. In the evening, they float the horse on the river.
The living room、15
I felt something cozy here.
The guest room、
This room was only for samurais.
There is small furniture at the corner of this room. Pretty and tiny bamboo
crafts are exhibited. They made me happy.
This is an annex which was
built about 100 years ago. It is a study room in the shoin style of
traditional Japanese architecture. It is named “Ge-pa-rou” which means "Ge" for the moon, "pa" for the wave and "rou" for the tower. The master invited artists here.
Typical finishing of the shoin style |
Sliding door “Shoji” in the photo above, I liked this. |
Another sliding door in the first floor |
The photo below shows the book
storage building. They would have enjoyed reading. Reading is the great fun of
life, I think.
The internal garden、
The road in front of the house、
The photo above shoes Koukyouji temple and the tomb of the famous
princess “Senhime”. It was near Sakano’s house.
