June; Udon noodle party
It was no attractive event in this month, but the
udon parties were held. Udon is a kind of Japanese noodle which
is made of flour. June is a harvest season of wheat.
It was written that the master was invited to “udon
and sake” party on the 9th of May.
On the 12th, he was invited to other udon party.
On the 18th, he invited five people and treated them with udon. The master would have used the wheat from his field and served homemade udon.
On the 9th, he went to Edo in order to buy a medicine for a child. He left early in the morning, and got back at the same day. He walked about 50km a day, What a good walker!

A messenger from Katori shrine which is the greatest shrine in this prefecture came and asked for donation. Another messenger from Zenkoji temple which is the one of the most famous temple came and asked for donation to repair the building which was damaged by the earthquake. The calm days continued.

July; Visiting Oyama
On the 6th, three guys got back to the village from Oyama which is 80km away. Mt.Oyama, whose height is 1,252m, is subject to worship even now. It is said that Oyama Afuri shrine brings rain while draught and makes worshipers life successful. An agent called Oshi from Mt.Oyama visited Mr. Yoshino regularly, so visiting Oyama might be popular tour in this area. I think it was a good recreation after hard work of rice planting.

The master had a one day trip to Edo on the 4th.
He departed early in the morning as usual. He got on a ship this time and
arrived at Koutokuji temple past noon. He bought medicine in front of the
temple. There various kinds of shops and restaurants there because many people
visit temple.

He visited Asakusa-kannon temple on the way
to home. Asakusa has always been the lovely town. I think he prayed for the
patient and enjoyed the stalls. Unlike his retired father, he was very busy.
They got information that the Buddhist event “Go-kaicho” of Nagareyama temple would be held from 4th to 6th. “Go” is prefix which means respect. “Kaicho” means to open the curtain in front of the specific Buddhist statue. “Go-kaicyou” is held in defined period. People can watch and worship the statue only in the period. His mother and Otake visited the event on the 5th.

The Bon was held in this month. On the 13th,
they burned the fire to welcome the spirits of ancestors. On the 14th,
they went to the tomb. Retired father also went to the tomb in Kashiwa which is
5km away. His mother and Aisuke visited “Segaki,” which people pray for unfortunate
spirits, to two different temples on the 8th and on the 22nd.
It is very strange that his retired father
and mother didn’t go out together.

August; Mr.Kamiya who was a samurai came and stayed in his house
The first half of August is the rice harvest season. Katsugoro Kamiya and his servant came to Yoshino’s house and stayed for three nights. He asked to borrow money, and it bothered the master. Mr. Kamiya also visited on the 30th of September and on the 12th of November, and stayed a night respectively. The farmers would have lent money to the samurai who were in the upper class than the farmer’s class. The upper class asked monetary favor to the lower class, it was an amusing relationship.
