The museum is in Sakaki (Nagano prefecture,
central Japan). Sakaki was a post-town
on Hokkoku kadou
(highway) which was the way to Naoetsu (coast city at the Sea of Japan). There
was a honjin (inn for exalted people such as a daimyo
lord) at the museum site. The main gate built in the 18th
century still remains.
Everyday items, which were used from the late 19th to the early 20th century, are displayed at the room in the gate. It is written, “Feel free to take items in your hand”. It’s a good idea! I guess many photos are upload on social medias.
The museum was built in 1929 as a private residence.
Hina festival (girls’ festival) dolls were exhibited when I visited.
The set of the dolls above is so luxurious; how rich its owner was!
Local history is exhibited in the room. The detail explanations of Murakami clan who dominated the area from 12th to 16th century show me how locals like Sakaki.
Mathematics originated in Japan is exhibited in this room. There were not only practical questions but also ones like quiz. Some of created questions were offered to Shinto shrine like short poem “haiku” (lower right). It’s an intellectual entertainment, wasn’t it?
Sakaki post-town is shown in this room. It was a large one where the most powerful daimyo (Maeda clan) stayed overnight in the Edo period (1603~1868).
Advertisements of shops and inns are printed on the book at lower right. Even the honjin placed the ad; it meant not only high-ranking travelers but also ordinary ones could stay there. However, the accommodation fee was probably high.
There were more than a hundred inns in the post-town. Some inns hired women who entertained travelers from an early period.
Sakagi is along Chikuma River (the longest river in Japan). There was a difficult place “Yokobuki slope” because of strong wind. Even the daimyo load of Maeda clan was forced to get out of his palanquin and to walk. His attendant informed retainer at his territory of his safe passage by an express messenger.
The national highway (R18) runs along the river, and the railway goes through the rocky mountain at present. It became trouble-free.
There was also a difficult place at upstream “Iwa (rock) bana (nose)”.
I had a specialty “Oshibori (squeezed) udon” at "Kaize". We dip udon noodle into the dipping sauce which is squeezed juice of daikon radishes. If it is too spicy for you, you can add miso-paste which makes the sauce mild. It's good!!
Sakaki is on the old highway (kaidou) “Hokkoku Kaidou”.
