The museum in central Japan (Shizuoka Prefecture) faces the Pacific Ocean. It is in Numazu Imperial Villa Memorial Park. It shows us the local fishery, agriculture and everyday life well. I understand how fisherman enjoyed their work. I have permission to upload the photos of exhibits.
The museum is in the pine forest at the coast.
Fishery equipment are exhibited in the first floor. Some are designated as the national cultural assets. Photos are exhibited how to use the fishing net in lower left.
They were catching a school of dolphin. Around one hundred and twenty fishermen were involved in the exciting work from the 6th to 11th of May in 1944 which was almost the end of WW2.
The picture in 1832 shows us catching tuna fishes. Lookouts were in the watch tower. When a school of tuna came, all fishermen went to the beach and enclosed tuna in the net. They hooked a tuna by shibikagi and they hit a tuna head by kakeya hammer. The important matter was to kill a tuna immediately in order to keep high quality. Merchants were at the beach, so the fishermen could make money soon after fishing. What a simple job it was!
Tuna fish which swim in the deep sea come to the surface of the water in Numazu. Because the sea becomes shallow suddenly there.
The exhibit behind the ship is the model of a watch tower. The irori fire place in the room makes us feel their signs of living.
The broken megaphone (roufu) is three meters long. It was used to inform fishermen of tuna coming. After they knew the information, a lookout used the hat instructed fishing boats. The fishing season is from March to December; I wonder how many times they went into fishing. When I was an engineer, my colleague said that waiting is a part of work.
Among the various fishing tools, a guardian deity of a ship is exhibited (lower left). A pair of dolls (male and female), two dices, twelve coins, five kinds of grains, hair, make-up tools and so on were put inside a mast. When a ship is abolished, its deity and case is enshrined at their home shrine. Praying is an important mindset.
The baskets were used to keep fish food. Merchants bought sardines and put them into the baskets. Those were sold to bonito fishermen who came to Numazu from across Japan. I didn’t know such a occupation; it was a side business of local fishermen around a hundred years ago.
The title section is “Fishing grounds near the coast”. Most of them disappeared and changed to a land or a seawall.
The photo above is a fishing village around a hundred years ago. They didn't fish but just enjoyed swimming.
They neither worked but had a picnic on the sea.
Rice cultivation at muddy fields was very difficult work.
The flat wooden boards are shoes to work in a muddy rice field. They sank to their waist in the field while planting. It’s so harsh.
Many everyday goods are exhibited.
Old lighters are exhibited. Flint sparks and easily burned stuff were used before matches were prevailed.
The building above was a part of an imperial villa. The main building was burned out during WW2.
The building above is a famous shrine near the museum, Mishima Taisha. The mochi with sweet bean paste (lower right) is a specialty.
