Sukagawa city in Fukushima prefecture is
located about 200km north of Tokyo. There was a small castle town which was
ruled by Naganuma-han. It
was on the highway from Tokyo to Aizu-wakamatsu which is an inland city in
Fukushima.
The exhibition room is as large as two class rooms. History and folklore of Naganuma are introduced properly. BUT, photography is prohibited. I upload the photo of its brochure.
Life in the four seasons、
There is an area of the irori fireplace. Pot-hooks “Jizaikagi” are exhibited. The fish shaped one is popular which is a charm of a fire-prevention. Other major shapes are Mt, Fuji and hyotan gourd which bring us good fortune.
The fire is sacred, so people have kept manners not to step on the edge of irori, not to hang daily laundry such as diapers, and so on.
Lacquerware are used on the festival days and the ceremonial days. People put red rice in a lacquered container and delivered it to a wedding ceremony or a funeral. Same container was used for both happy and unhappy events.
The shape of a sake (alcohol) container is usually cylindrical like a beer barrel, but brick shape had been major in this area. I think high skill was needed to make a wooden cuboid tank.
Eating and Drinking、
Old utensils are exhibited. The explanation of a lunchbox is interesting.
People put rice balls in it. Ume-boshi (pickled plum with salt) was in the rice ball which was seasoned by salt or miso paste. It was wrapped by a siso perilla leaf or a nori seaweed sheet. They ate pickled vegetables, dried fishes or miso paste with it. It’s really high-salt diet!
Wearing、着る
Snow boots which are made of straw are exhibited. Straw of rice is soft and heat-retaining, moreover it is near at hand. It was useful material in a cold region.
Work tools、
Tools for the rice-farming such as a wheelbarrow which buries weed under the ground and tools for forestry such as a saw for cutting a tree are exhibited. Mountain workers walked with a whetstone while working. Working in the nature is good for our mental health, I can say.
The museum is located in the peaceful rural area.
