This is a museum of culture in
Kyoto. A part of this museum was a Kyoto branch of “Bank of Japan”. An annex
was built for exhibition rooms and hall. The titles of the thematic exhibitions
were “Gion-matsuri festival – treasures of Ennogyoujya float” and “Thirty three
temples in Kyoto part3 – related people and treasures of temples”.

The cultural history of Kyoto was exhibited in
the compact space which was equivalent to two schoolrooms. The interesting
video was projected on the wall. It showed us the lives of people from picture
scrolls in Edo, Muromach, Kamakura and Heian periods. In that video, children
played under the stage where the great monk and his believers performed chant
while dancing. It was fun.
The exhibits were about plates and so on which were under the ground. The ground level of Kyoto one thousand years ago was two meters lower than today. Various things were accumulated for a long time which I found very amazing.

In the room for Gion-matsuri festival which has
been held every year since 869, Ennogyoujya float was exhibited.

An
embroidered curtain was so gorgeous. Plus the golden ornaments were gorgeous too. The
main event of Gion-matsuri is the float parade, however the parade is preceded
by two evening events known as Yoiyama and Yoi-yoiyama. People who visited
Kyoto from remote areas must have made a time to see the floats because those
were so beautiful and unforgettable. The experience might have given people good
travel stories which were shared with their friends and relatives. I understand why they hold the eve of
Gion-matsuri festival in this museum. People need time for watching floats and
feeling the atmosphere of the traditional festival.

In other
thematic exhibition about temples, the Kannon Bodhisattva statue in the dedicated container
was beautiful and I felt how the owner believed the Kannon.

The
World Heritage Nijo-jo Castle is just 15-minute walk from this museum. It was
also a shogun’s residence in Kyoto. It is really worth going. A must go!
