Raiden (legendary sumo-wrestler) museum、

Raiden is the stage name of the strongest sumo-wrestler in history . Unexpectedly, he (1767-1825) wrote diary and letters a lot. Therefore, we can know about him a lot even now. The small museum tells us his life well. Sumo was the definitely most popular sport back then; people enjoyed playing and watching sumo. However, I’m not sure whether he enjoyed it or not. I’ll try to read his diary. I also visited the house where he was born nearby. The museum is i n the building of the roadside rest area  “Raiden Kurumi (walnut, the local specialty)-no-Sato (village)”. His height was 197 cm and his weight was 188 kilograms; he was a giant at that time.

The museum is in the castle site , wherein the most popular warlord Sanada Clan based in the 16 th century (Ueda is in Nagano prefecture, central Japan). Although the exhibits are mainly about samurai (warriors and bureaucrats), I focus on people’s life as always, which is the theme of my blog. Lickly enough, I could see the special exhibition which themed the local onsen (hot spring resort). Onsen is crucial fun of people. Btw, I upload photos under the permission of the museum. Main building on the right and annex on the left. The entrance gate is between towers which were bult in the  Edo period  (1603 ~ 1868) . The  six-coins are the crest of Sanada Clan . ...
